Hmmm what to do with a car 4 years out of SORN?

I've recently 'inherited' a C-reg mini City, it's been dry stored in a barn for 4 years, infact i took it there. Unfortunately the previous owner didn't get it SORNED, mostly because he wasn't the registered keeper. The actual registered keeper, a foreign gent, is no longer in the country.

So i've got this problem, the cars not been SORNed for 4 years, no one has any paper work, and no doubt if i try to get paperwork from the DVLA and become the registered keeper, they'll try to bill me for the SORN!

Anyone have any experience or advice on the matter?

I'm not too worried about telling them it's location as its currently in the middle of a wood store so rather hard to find ;)

They don’t bill new owners for previous owners’ SORN misdemeanours. I know we’re talking about the DVLA and all that but even they would struggle to reasonably argue you were liable for a previous owners paperwork nonsense! Just send em the £25 and wait for the logbook to turn up.

I think that if you apply to DVLA to become the registered keeper, if approved, the duty of SORN starts from when it is registered in your name and is not retrospective.

Edit. Mr B's wise words beat me to it.

Yeah, don't worry Vanny, just apply for V5 and you'll be ok. To save yourself the bother though I'll do you a favour and buy the car off you for £40 and I'll even stand the cost of the V5.

Pah, £40, stick it in your fuel tank Mr Cavette!

It's a bit of an odd situation, but basically the car is being given to me with a great big wad of cash to be restored while my mate is off playing army. Seems like a good trade all in all. Though it is a mini so inevitably will be in a right ruin once i get a really good eye on it.

Will fill in the blanks on a DVLA comedy form and see what happens.

Indeed,I went to tax a Fiesta at a Post Office a few years ago and the woman behind the counter said

"This has never been Sorned and the tax has expired, youll be getting a fine from the DVLA"

I explained I was the new keeper, and she said

"It doesnt matter. The next person taxing it is liable for the fine, so youll have to pay it."

But I wasnt, and I didnt. I just got taxed, a bag of Revels and off on my merry way.

Moral of the story: Dont trust women called Janice.

Once you have the v5c and insurance, you can tax the car online.

I know from experience that they will pursue the last registered owner for not sorning the car. That mistake cost me stg40 earlier this year.

All you need is a V62 ( I think from memory ) to apply for a V5C in your name, and once you get it,simply SORN it as soon as you get it and job done. How can they possibly issue a fine for something the previous owner has failed to do; it would be like issuing speeding points and a fine to you because the owner before you didn't pay the fine or take the points !
