Well, am trying to get some sensible quotes to move a few vehicles to my new house and thought I'd have a nosy about and see what other people are moving round the country!

So first car to draw some interest was a Jaguar XKSS, then a MkVII for restoration, some Fiat Coupes, a nice A35, Fiat 128 in orange, Honda Acty, Daimler DS420.

NOw when will I get a sensible quote for my vehicles - £250 to move five vehicles 17 miles is a nonsense!

Is that towing them, or driving them? Five vehicles for £250 is not bad, £50 per car? That's a mornings work for someone presumably (to move one car), even though it wouldn't take all morning that's such a short job.

Do any of them drive? Could you slip someone with trade plates £100 to drive them for you?

the sherpa is drivable but needs an MoT and tax and I may just MoT it and drive it back home.

The Bond is dismantled and on three ropey tyres.

The scooter will be T&T'd and drivable but its 17 miles in a 50 - it'll probably go in the hire van!

The Messerschmitt, I am concluding, should just get A framed as I have the frame there for it.

Smart roadster starts but has a dead clutch/clutch actuator and is going nowhere apart form on a trailer.

I reckoned that yes it is £50 a vehicle but the schmitt and bond is one load as they don't come to 16 feet between them, the scooter and smart another and the sherpa a load on its own.

That's three loads by my reckoning, and yes, a morning and 120 miles plus ten mins at each end loading/unloading.

I'd be after a quote of c. £150-180 for that.

Ten minutes loading/unloading? Forgive me if a spit tea all over my keyboard and laugh. Having had a crack at the vehicle transport game myself, it NEVER takes that small an amount of time. This sounds like a job that's relatively small on miles, but big of workload needed, which I guess is why quotes aren't coming in at the level you're expecting. When you're typically paid per mile, you'll want a job that's mainly driving.

I could load my schmitt and bond on a flatbed in ten minutes and have them strapped down too!! God knows I have done it often enough.

As someone who spent three hours once moving an XK150 drophead with seized brakes onto a trailer I know the time something awkward can take. I've done plenty of vehicle removals that have been a hassle, and many that have been a dream to do!

Sorry but a pro should take ten mins to do it with cars that are lined up and ready to go. I'm not asking them to dig them out of the garage and get them to the trailer or place them into perfect position in their new home, just bring a blooming trailer and load/unload and then drive off. It only takes them that at the side of the road when I have been recovered by them, so why should it be any different on a shiply quote.

how did you get on with the flat pack trailer by the way?

it's still flat packed - not going to make it up till I move as it'll be easier then.

Shame I don't have a tow bar on any of my cars now, as I'd offer to do it for free. Sounds like a fun way to spend a morning :)

When is the move happening Campbell?

move is 9-10 January.

My local trailer hire place has closed down too so it may be a trip to Cheltenham to pick up a trailer - then decide to stick it behind the diesel or petrol XM!

just a thought. Would the scooter fit in the sherpa? Book a test local and don't go/cancel. Thats 2 done. A frame the schmit. Thats 3. Shiply the other 2. That should keep costs down

Fred

am pretty much decided the scooter is going in the back of hire van or removals truck.

The Sherpa could be booked in for an MoT, and the schmitt A-framed, leaving the other two, which could be fitted onto the back of a trailer.

I can get a trailer for the week for £120 and just have to sort out the storage of the vehicles for a day or so up my street if I can't manage to get them moved all at once.
