The Future is Shite

Today I received my usual Auto Trader Newsletter.

In it is an article called "Ultimate family cars"

It exclusively contains ultimate future shite, so I thought I share it with you:

Entirely btw, if I'd buy either of their recommendations, my wife would ask for a divorce and my children would stop talking to me.

So at least for us, it's a list of ultimate family destroyers.

The what?

I remember Betamax and it was tosh.

From an audio and video quality POV Betamax utterly pissed all over VHS and V2000, in fact its still used in Sony's BetaCam format by a few TV companies for outside broadcast.

Remember Treasure Hunt? Well Limehouse Studios swapped from U-Matic to Betamax because of the extended record time and the increase in quality, Thames adopted BetaCam, as did quite a few of the BBC regional newsteams.

If Sony had been savvy and struck a decent deal with the Hollywood film houses for movie rights then they would have sent the Japanese Victor Corporation's VHS format the same way as Philips double sided V2000.

I still have a stack of L750's and two Sony SL5200 Hi-Fi decks. They are great (plus all my 80's comedy stuff like Coming Next and Who Dares Wins is on Beta).

Never, never ever diss Betamax.

On the otherhand feel free to diss Fords B-Max

I think people are confusing BetaCam and BetaMax as there are differences

The first generation Betacam used pretty much the same set up found in the SL5500 home hi-fi deck but with head and tape speed and azimuth differences to improve on the recorded quality at the expense of recording time.

You could use a home L750 tape in a Betacam camera and vice versa (but the recorded content was not the same and wasnt compatible)

I vaguely remember getting some promotional guff on a rival system by JVC using VHS tapes but by the time that was launched quite a few studios had already invested in Betacam equipment and I cant think of anyone who used it for OB work. Im fairly sure that U-Matic has died a death now too, but it was 1989 when I last did any television work so things have probably changed a lot.

And the modern standard is DigiBeta - different again.

If my parents could afford one I reckon that they would trade in their 05 C-Max for a new B-Max. :)

yep, more expensive than VHS, quality wasn't THAT much better. Also tape was always in contact with heads, even on RW FF increasing wear. tapes were generally shorter too

They're still selling the Mercedes R-Class?! Who'd want to spend that kind of money on one of those?
