Have been offered £2000 for my cortina.........hmmmm,

As per title, i'm a little unsure what to do about it. Some background to the car, and the circumstances of the offer might help i guess.

I bought it in the summer of 2011, as a birthday present to myself ('cos you can do that when your single  ), it looked a good un' and i was a happy little chimp, though the paint was 10 different shades of blue, so i decided i'd take it into work and give it a quick dust over ( i'm a panel beater in an Audi bodyshop).

I expected this to take about a week doing a little bit each night, and to cost about £400 all in...............very long story short, 4 months, £3000+ (stopped counting after that) and shitloads of geniune NOS parts later she was done. Sadly though i think i preferred her as original, as i also have a mega low mileage virginal mk5 and i seem to use this exclusively, and ignore the black car i put so many hours of graft into.

We have an outside firm come and collect the scrap from work, the guy who does it is a nice enough bloke and i've had dealings with him before. As a coincidence it had the 'tina on a ramp as i was taking some nearly new tyres of a car that we were weighing in (company hack, cat d former write off s-reg escort with factory gaffer tape on the bumper corners!) me and the scrap lad got chatting and he had a good look over the car. Bearing in mind she's parked outside in all weathers, and hasn't been washed in a month he still offered me £2k there and then cash !

What would you do?

The pro's for keeping:

i know a lot off people think they're shit cars but i've put a lot into this motor, not so much the financial part but the actual physical graft.

I worry i'm really going to regret getting rid off it.

Me and my mates have had a laugh in her, and she's been on some adventures and created some memories.

From a mercenary point of view, it's a reasonly solid investment with prices slowly on the increase.

I've got rid of cracking cars before and regretted it.

The pro's for getting rid;

It constantly needs things doing to it, they tend to be comparitively minor but they soon stack up and take time and money i can't spare. (the same can be said of the other car, but i now actually avoid working on the black one)

I don't have off street parking so having two near identical cars both fully taxed mot'd and insured is a ball ache

She used to be referred to as "her" or "kristina" (original i know), now it's refereed to as "it" on a good day or "that fucking thing!" the rest of the time.

Think the love is gone, i used to look at it and think "yeah! that's awesome", now i look at it and don't think anything, it's just another thing i own.

Two grand would be very handy at the moment.

I've got rid off cracking car's before and regretted it, i'm still breathing.

So what are your opinions........ take the money and let some else take care of her/put it on ebay for a stupid amount. Or hold on to her and hope the love comes back.

Every time I end up in this situation, I carefully think about the question whether I will miss it or not.

You also need to factor in, that 2 grand will enable you to travel shite paths you haven't travelled before.

You'd be nicely in the territory of a halfways decent Granada MKII Ghia, which would be a nice stablemate for your other 'tina, no?

That's a good point junkman, i've had almost exclusively fords but never a grandad. I saw a mint sierra the other day, and fancied another (i had four in a row, pinto and twincam powered and they were great value for money cars)

I hadn't considered getting rid of the car before, but since that offer i have been thinking about it. I could tidy it up a bit and probaly get more on ebay but don't know if i could be arsed with all the tits and dreamers on there.

Putting yourself through the ordeal of an Ebay auction in this time and age, what with all the prevailing dumbing down of society and all, is a tough call indeed.

You should only consider it if you want to sell fast. If you are in no time constraints (which you aren't), putting an ad on one of those classic car sites would ...

well, I guess nowadays attract the same deadfucks. It's hopeless.

You could tell the guy who offered you the 2k what already went into the car and whether he may adjust his offer a little bit northward?

Think you have a point there concerning deadfucks.

Ebay= Arseholes

Buysellcortina= Generally well meaning, but not a lot willing to put their hand in there pocket unless it says 1600e/GXL on the back.

Retro rides= Hipsters telling you to "hit it with a stick" and put it on banded steels, with the contents of a charity shop on a roof rack and at least one panel covered in stickers/rust because that's 'retro' (though if memory serves, late 80's/early 90's period retro mods would be coat hanger ariel, capri four spokes and filler/primered wings)

Cal, the scrap lad didn't see it at it's best, and the fact he quite happily walks around with two grand+ in his pocket says to me he must quite like the car (and can afford to look after it which is more than i can/am willing to do at the moment).

Really not sure what to do, head says it's a good motor, it's depreciation proof, the love will come back.

Heart says we've traveled our path together, it wouldn't have passed aother MOT if i hadn't intervened so i've given it a second life. Now's the time to go save something else from death as this one is safe now..................Now i've actually read what i've just written i think the decision is made.

This is going into the quotes thread.

No, you win the self righteous indignation of all the IMMAGRENTS (sic). And some vouchers to Brewer's Fayre for £1.14 off a family portion of an Alsatian roast.

Re the Cortina; You've fallen out of love, get rid and pocket 2 bags. Hopefully you've learned to make the same mistake again. Pass go etc etc.

£2000 isn't bad for a Mk5, although you might get a bit more on a good day, I'd tell the chap if he can make it's £2200-2300 he's got a deal, he obliviously wants it and will pay a bit extra and as you have another it's not like your going to miss it too much.

I'm still kicking myself even now for selling my mint Mk4 Escort last year for the bargain Mk3 Escort (which i had to buy) only for the wife not didn't get on with and to sell again.

Hi Trigg, I am tempted sometimes to sell my Roadster for a couple of Pandas...but I know I would end up regretting it. Well, probably. :D
