Landy Buying Advice NOT OMG D701!SWL

I've been asked to source a Land Rover 110 Safari and I'm wondering what problems to look for. as my Landy experience ends with the Series 3 I'm hoping that a few on here will point me in the right direction as to common faults and rot points.

It's fitted with the 300tdi engine, is that a good lump?

Tdi is always good - though they aren't averse to blowing head gaskets.

 

Rot in the footwells, chassis (pretty much all of it but especially outriggers and rear crossmember), bulkhead (especally top corners below the windscreen - often bodged) for a start. Electrolytic reaction on the doors between the aluminium panel and steel frame making the paint fall off.

 

Clanking transmissions, clanking diffs, knackered clutches, knackered gearboxes (300Tdi should have R380 'box but might not if retro-fitted). Shite electrics. Oh and any ONE LIFE LIVE IT sticker needs removing ASAP.

Summed it up nicely, the doors will have rotten frames, I personally wouldn't worry unless they are so borked they won't shut or are in danger of falling off.

The chassis and oily bits are the most important but the side frames on those station wagons (B/C posts and the 'sills') rot spectacularly and can leave them extremely wobbly. You won't be able to see all of them but a look inside the second row doors and rear arches is worthwhile. They tend to piss water in around all seals so don't be surprised if it stinks.

The 300 is OK, have a good look and see how well it has been fitted and find out when the cambelt was done. Be useful to know what was in it originally too. Any history on the current lump is a bonus. The usual engine/diesely checks will suffice otherwise.

If it has a long test, drives alright and isn't too rotten it sounds OK for the money

I'd be worried about the one above.

 

It appears to be falling off the page. Either that or it has incredible gradient climbing skills.

I would carry a barge pole with me during the viewing. Stickers, shoddy snorkel, crappy tyres that guzzle fuel and add extra strain and wear to the drivetrain, add to that the "conversion" and you have a recipe for an expensive disaster. I wager this has been thrashed at pay'n'play sites every weekend, and jetwashed off for the pictures. Yes, the chassis' rot, the bulkheads rot, the doors rot, and they leak like sieves. Find another, save yourself a world of pain.

 

Although it DOES have a remarkably good handbrake.

A retrofitted 300Tdi is quite unusual, fitting a 200Tdi is easier to the pre 1990 ones.

 

The biggest problem I've found is getting one that hasn't been stolen / re-registered :roll:

 

EDIT: One other thing - does he really have to use a station wagon? You get more for your money with a pickup or 2 door hardtop 110, as I've found whilst looking for a station wagon :(

This has been bought. I now feel MASSIVELY guilty because I've made a couple of hundred on the deal out of my own family. :?

 

I'm tempted to donate the money back to them somehow.

Keep it. It'll give you some solace when they come complaining that their Land Rover has broken.

This might make you feel better. My latest piece of shyte. A mere 110 wasn't enough.

A winter project as it needs passenger side sill as per usual...amongst other things :P

This is my billionth land-rover and it's actually a keeper. :shock:

 

BTW, as said, lose the sticker on the 110 as people will toot and shout when you are getting carried along on an AA flatbed.
