JohnDeere Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 Well, this was back in May 1996. I kept this ad from Armstrong Massey in Beverley published in the Hull Daily Mail. Metro, a.k.a. Rover 111s, hitting £9995 for the rag top. H-reg Audi 80E for £6k, and £16.5k for a 95M 620 Ti (and you wonder why people stopped buying Rovers and started buying 3-series Bimmers about that time...) I was looking for a new motor at the time, bought the 94M 416SLi, M211GRW ex Rover-owned management car, for the enormous sum of £7745 (wow, £250 discount, I knew how to haggle then. Not). Bought on Rover finance at 14.8% APR... those were the days. Definitely not the Autoshite approach.
Ross_K Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 £5000 for a K-reg Polo? Not much has changed in 16 years...
holbeck Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 Love the way the Montego for £8495 is under 'other makes'
Pete-M Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 There's nothing in that advert that I'd have wanted back then, and nothing in it that I'd want now. Even if you moved the decimal point six places to the left. Rover fucked everything up in 1968 by getting involved with BLMC and didn't have any chance to ever really recover. Two half decent creations of their own from '68 to the end of the line, the SD1 which they cocked up by building badly and the MG ZT 260 which didn't have a lot of Rover in it. I don't count anything with Honda involvement as being a Rover really. The 75 could have been a nice thing but needed engines that didn't go pop. It's alright saying "All you need to do is check the levels eight times a day, change the coolant weekly and change the head gasket once a month and they're brilliant" but you don't have to do that with other cars, which means it's a problem if you want to sell 'normal cars for normal people'.....
Mash Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 Interesting to see that. Massey's were my local dealer - I grew up in Beverley and my parents still live there. I did my work experience from school in the workshop back in 1990!
walk Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 Apparently the 93K Cav V6 is "hard to find at £7995". No shit! And the top Rover 620Ti (no mileage shown) will have been their dealer demonstrator and therefore will have been absolutely bludgeoned at every opportunity (at a guess) I love these old add threads.
Shep Shepherd Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 I'll have the Orion, provided that it's a mark 2
