At 8.30 this morning, in glorious sunshine, wife's Clio shat itself on her way to work. Quick peek in the rocker box revealed my fears; snapped cambelt. Bollocks! Double bollocks as the service history indicates the belt is only 20,000 miles old.

She's got two interviews this week and needs wheels, the Mini is broken and I need the Land Rover, so I needed something quick.

Luckily the steam world pulls together in the same way the shite world does and a couple of calls later and £450 we had

1.1 pez engine, 90,000 miles on it, drives like a little go cart! Much better than the thoroughly wank Clio. We have been to Leicester and back in it tonight and it seems a nice little car.

So after my 60 year old good old Landy dragged it's sorry ass back home, I now have a dead Renault lurking at the bottom of the drive, what can I expect damage wise on a 1.9 diesel with a snapped belt? She was doing 40mph so I'm expecting the worst. It's a shit/shite spec T-reg one with manual everything, it's white and it stinks as it lets water in and soaks the carpets... it was also £600 and has paid for itself so I'm tempted to put it on the Bay as spares or repairs. :?

Best bet before ringing the scrap man - just sounds not worth bothering with. I believe its an interferance engine when the belts gone so yours will be pulped inside.

Thought so. It's a pile of toss anyway and I know I will resent working on it!

I'll get some pics and you can see what you think.

I don't think it's possible for a diesel engine to be non-interference. Having said that I got away with it on my Escort somehow. Check the valve clearances (assuming it doesn't have hydraulic tappets), if none of them are wide it's worth fitting a new belt.

On my pug 205 Turbo Diseasels I never really had problems with interference with snapped cambelts. I remember coming back from a speed awareness course from over Preston way on the M62 and I snapped the cambelt at 90mph and the thing was fine. I initially thought I had a fuel blockage or a minor engine fault so slammed it down through all 5 gears trying to bump start it at speed, aiming for the hard shoulder. I opened the bonnet to find the cam had come through the top of the rocker cover, as all the guides holding it down had broken. Easy fix, dropped another cam and cambelt in from my large spares collection and it worked fine. At a later date, needing to change the headgasket on the same engine, I found no evidence that the pistons had hit the valves or any other horror story stuff you generally get with cambelt failure. Being similar French chod, you may be as lucky as me and have no interference.

Going from my own experience, if you can be bothered and are mechanically minded, do a bit of re-search and change the cambelt yourself. You are at a loss now, and by changing a cambelt that might cost you £30, you may solve the problem and it might run again easier than you think. As long as you get the timing marks lined up!
