Mercedes estate advice thinking of buying

Recommended Posts

Gents, few ladies and those of indifference,

I'm thinking of getting maybe a Mercedes c220 diesel estate or, but i think they're too juicy as I do 50 miles a day, a 300 series diesel estate.

Recommendations? Experiences? Good Bad Ugly. What goes the shape of the pear? Known faults? Service intervals?

Any advice/ info / input greatfully received purlease.

Thanking you.

What sort of year and budget are you looking at?

Good question. Well put. Deserves an answer!

Seems you can get a lot of early 2000s C250s for £1800 to £2000 or an older E300 but i think their a bit too juicy.

better as a C250TD estate, the turbo greatly improves the drive-ability and economy. I had a 1996 W202 estate, main issue is rust and air leaks in the fuel system - check that it starts OK from cold and look for air bubbles in the clear piping leading to the fuel distributor while it is running. Best to check that it pulls well under full throttle as intercooler under front valance is difficult to get to.

Think I'm getting to agreeing. I looked up the E series TD mpg and it not great at best.Think they're for the landed gentry and their dogs! The 250s do seem to rot all around to a foot up! Hmmm. Thanks for the tips re the fuel though.

I'm just going off internet research here, I've not owned one, just done a little research as I'm currently thinking about getting one as well.

E class are quite large, c class are not as big as you think.

Personally I'd say the engine of choice is the 220 cdi. Only slightly less power than the 250 and quite a bit better mpg.

300 & 250 non common rail engines can be modified to run on veg oil, 220's cannot.

Merc petrol engines can be quite efficient. A mate of mine is currently getting 36mpg from his c240 (v6 petrol) and these aren't usually the best on fuel. 230k's are supposed to quiet good on fuel.

Instead of an E300 how about a BMW 530d? prices seem to be dropping quite a bit on these. More power/torque and better mpg than Merc 300's

I think the Ebenezeer300 is just to big ie parking and too juicy.

Yep the 220CDI is the one it seems, some bargains if you want to travel to gte your monies worth, everything down here is over priced!

Seems they did a c series that ran on LPG too - get me and my internetz research skillz!

Running a 405 TD at the mo which is misertastic but I'd like something a tad fresher - long story! ha ha
