Flasher units - will any old one do?

Has anyone here got a degree in advanced flashing?

the OE flasher unit on the DS (amusingly called a Clignoteur) has three terminals but only two wires connect. What is the third terminal for? Is it possible to get one with a louder ticker as I can't hear it over the noise of the engine/fuel pump/wind/Mrs DSdriver.

The third contact is typically for the dash indicator light, if there's a single one that blinks for both directions. If there's a pair, they're usually powered off the same wires that make the outside bulbs blink.

Technically yes you can fit a "louder" two-pin blinker (electronic ones tend to have a third terminal for a local ground to work properly).

I had the same problem in my Victor though- problem solved with a bit of epoxy- found a large part of the firewall under the dash and glued the back of the blinker box to that. It acted as a sounding-board, and gave a very pleasant PLINK-TOINK PLINK-TOINK.

Just thinking it through... ... ...so the unit is on the feed side of the switch, saves having one for each side. I suppose I cant use the third terminal for hazzard lights cos the unit is only rated at 2x21watts. I am not sure that there is such a thing as a handy " large part of the firewall" behind the DS speedo. Would screwing it to a piece of biscuit tin* lid work?

*other tins are available

Worth a try. Or an empty baked bean can. Something that would act to amplify the noise.

My GTA appears to follow French suit and has a seperate blinker unit rated at 4x21W for the hazards.
