Cheapo BMW e38 740i For Sale

I've had this 740i for a few months and now having just completed the longest disc and pads change in history (6 weeks) I'm thinking I may sell it one to someone who can be bovvared to sort it out. Lets just just get it out the way there's a problem with the gearbox. It's not going into limp home mode or anything like that but the auto box is reluctant to go into 4th and top gear although if you knock it into 4th then back to drive it will usually go into 4th gear then top. Some interwebbing has found that it probably needs a gearbox oil change as it's done 272k and these things are "sealed for life" and I wouldn't be surprised if it's not been done. I've bought the filter from BMW but one of the key ingredients of the required ATF must be unicorn horns as it's a tenner a litre and it needs 6 litres for a the change.

It's a bit rough round the edges the worst being the boot lid and one rear arch but it's but not rotten. Also the TV /Stereo doesn't work.

Good bits are, MOT til Feb 2013, tax until July this year. The interior is in great condition and is all electric, it has HID light upgrade, the engine sounds sweet even though it's done all those miles and as you can imagine it goes like stink. I''ve just put new front discs and pads on it. It also has racing dynamic 17" wheels with good tyres that are probably worth a couple of hundred quid on their own. It does about 18mpg.

I'm looking for £400 quid for it and I'll throw in the 40 quid gear box filter. I'm in Troon, Ayrshire on the West Coast of Scotchland.

You could probably drive it home but there's a chance the fugger will stick in 3rd, which will be slow noisy and result in about 4mpg.

I just thought I'd see if anyone fancies it before I either splash the cash and do the gearbox oil or take the wheels and some other choice bits off and weigh it in.

Are the rear tyres a different radius to the fronts? That causes the box confusion - if you can manually get it into top, that's normally the issue.

Ebay might be the best place for this.

It did start doing this when I changed the wheels from the 18" ones it had before to these.

got any pics of the arch and boot damage?

i'm quite tempted, as i love a barge, but SWMBO is (quite agressively) against the idea.

it's a battle of wills at the moment

Here you go. The boot was hit by a slate before I got it.

Just like my 1.1 mk1 Fiesta!

TBH I really am one of those annoying dreamers who posts up how much they want it and then ends the post with 'GLWTS!'

As muchas I want it an I think I could just afford* to run it, at 20 there isn't anm insurance companie in the world who would even half consider this a workable proposition.

Anyway...

GLWTS!

No worries, I can imagine the call to the insurer would get tricky when you got to engine size.
