Needs MOTing, engine management light is on. And the exhaust is blowing from the downpipe.

Otherwise it's quite nice. I bough it to sell but I honestly don't want to sell it :/

Is the engine light due to 'you know what' or something else?

These are meant to be good fun to drive.

HGF doesn't make the EML come on, unless something else is wrong too.

I bought it with the understanding the headgasket had failed.

It was sat for 12 months I'm told, when they fired it up it shot water out of the exhaust. About 12 foot!

Today it was still shooting some water out when revved.

I left it ticking over for half an hour and it didn't reach half temp, the fan worked as normal, it was a bit smokey but that has stopped.

It pulls well, feels tight no knocking, slight graunching noise from offside front wheel...

There is next to no oil in it. A slight taping noise as a result I guess.

And then the manifold join has fire gum allover it and is blowing.

Sounds like HGF, but if these cars are used for short journeys, the large rear silencer gets full of recondensed water. What does the inside of the expansion tank look like?

This is the full MLS gasket set with stretch bolts, steel dowels and new oil rail. Get this one and do it right would be my recommendation.

There's no bubbling in the expansion tank, and no cream on the oil filler and it stays below half temp when sat idling. I'll fill the expansion tank to MAX and see how I go.

Surely it would overheat if HGF?

I rekon the management light will be a lambda sensor. it's all anyone says. My Pug 106 had the same thing but passed MOT before new rules. Maybe I should take it out and clean it. Also the hole cant be helping the sensor much.

"Normal" on these temp-wise is just below half, i.e. the thickness of the needle. Don't fill the expansion tank all the way up (as some have done). MAX is the seam on the tank.

The car will, of course, overheat if it has HGF, but if the water jacket has oil in it, the gauge will be lying. Mind you, squirting water 12 feet from the tail pipe is a little disconcerting!

Oil is 10/40 part synth, Halfords do 5 litres for about a score. It'll probably still tap a bit even after a flush and oil change - "They all do that sir!" :D

BTW that rad looks a bit fucked. Post 2000 Rover radiators are utter shit, so keep an eye on it.

How much is a replacement 4 branch manifold and is the cat that thing I can see in the picture?

Are they all the same 4 branch Arrangement? My mate says he has a Rover 200 in that mite do?

Should be, however, it's a Rover, and consistency of approach was never their strong suit! As long as it's off a 16v it should be the same, but there's one way to find out :D

A quick check for headgasket trouble is to have the engine running at operating temperature, and to CAREFULLY release the expansion tank cap,and to insert a emission gas analyser probe into the tank, but make sure it doesn't suck any water. If the analyser detects Hydrocarbons (HC),then its a sign of a failed gasket
