MOT abolished for pre-1960 vehicles

Whilst on the face of it this would seem like a change which could save people on here some money, I'm not sure I'm in favour of this.

It's only a matter of time before there is an accident and then all sorts of questions start getting asked - questions which could lead to proposals for restrictions on use or worse.

That aside, as someone who enjoys carrying out mechanical repairs on my vehicle but is far from a pro or an expert, for me the MOT is a very useful way of checking that my vehicle is safe. I wouldn't feel confident making that assessment myself.

This is the 3rd thread on it now!

I agree with what your saying though, once there's one accident caused by a car that's not up to standard all the classic car owners, regardless off the age of the car, will end up penalized.

We've all seen the state of these barn/hedge find rotten matt blacked Moggy Minors and Ford Populars that are found, imagine sharing a road with one with no ticket that hasn't been checked over by a professional. :?

We would have been better of with a 30 year rolling road tax exemption.

Sorry  I hate it when people do that! I did look but must be suffering from blind disease again...

Definitely agree the tax exemption would have been much better - although a lot more costly for the government of course.

Agreed Trigger and also (sadly) agree with the title of Alex's post on the same subject; you can just see the ebay listings now!

Still on the bright side it might lead to some amusing spotted threads. And I wonder if this will mean you can legally A-frame a pre-'60 without an MOT; probably not, the 'must be roadworthy' tag would apply?

I suspect loads of pre-1960 vehicles will end up getting a tug by Plod and checked for "roadworthiness" issues. Especially if they're slammed into the weeds and driven by some ridiculously banal scene knobhead.
