I thought I was treat my SD1 VDP EFi to a rotor arm and dizzy cap - I had'nt bought these items for years, I think the last ones I bought were for a senator in the 90's.

Rang my local factor, expecting to get them for around £20 the pair.

I nearly had heart failure - £15 for the arm and £28 for the cap.

Suffice to say I cleaned them up and put them back on the car - no doubt I will get them cheaper off fleabay.

Likewise I bought 5L of comma 20/50 classic oil - £22. I remember when I could get 5l of duckhams green for around £5.

Who said running an older car is cheaper?

Get a Series Land Rover then.. full exhaust system for mine is £54 all in. Full engine gasket set £12... Full braking system including pipes, 4 drums and all wheel cylinders, and a master cylinder, £130. I can get windscreens (2 on each vehicle) for £11 each, or for heated ones, £30 each... NEW doors are £40 a side. That's why I have them. I'm a tightwad. I get GIVEN spares for them... engines, gearboxes etc. I'm tripping over them at the mo.

It's Francis Maude's fault. He warned about a Lucas Drivers' strike :D

Mondeo TDCi is supposed to a bread and butter car?? Needed to replace a snapped caliper slider bolt. Rang two stealer's and was told they don't stock the bolt seperately... £45 for a kit. Whole caliper off a scrapper - £5. My local Ford dealer is a 5 minute drive and sells spares on fleabay a damn site cheaper tan they do over the counter.

Would they allow me to buy anything via. ebay and collect in person?

You've guessed correctly.

Bigg Red sorted me out for sliders on my Maverick. I also ran into the 'you need to buy the full kit' problem with my local stealer.

I seem to recall a mate having a mark 1 Laguna 2.2 diesel (?) which ate its camshaft. The price was something mad like £800 (in about 2002). We lobbed a 1.8 pez engine and box in it from a wrecked Laguna we got for £80. A lot of faff, but much money saved, since we got more than £80 back for the alloys and shell (kept the windscreen).

Regarding the Mondeo : we bought it locally with FSH and it was the same Ford stealer that had stamped up the book.... receipts for two new rear calipers were included and had been fitted only months before we'd bought the car,. The handbrake mechanism on these are renowned for seizing and sure enough I found this to be the case - had a terrible job on as the calipers had clearly never been replaced!! New drop links fitted on the front - nuts had only ever been tightened finger tight....

We've ran bangers for years- this Mondeo was supposed to be hassle-free. Give me a £400 heap of shite anyda. !
