Anyone know anything about vic checks?

I'm thinking f buying at cat c car and repairing it. I'm not sure what order things need to be done in, presuming it won't have a current mot, do I need to trailer it to a vosa station to get it cheked prior to an mot?

I guess I can't get it mot'd until I've got a v5, but can't get a v5 until is been checked?

Thanks very much!

Ah, I must be thinking back to when they computerised it and I had to take in my v5 since the car hadn't been mot'd for 15years.

I'm going to have to get this done on the Meg. My plan is to book an MOT for right after the VIC test, at the same location. Therefore driving the car there is legal. I'm not sure how it works on the mainland, but here in NI, it's all government run and the VICs take place at the MOT centres.

The vosa places seem few and far between for some reason. Sounds like I can get it mot'd first, then take it to the nearest place, all without reporting to a trailer.

I think the only rider to your plan is that the MoT must be pre-booked (make sure they write it down in case you get stopped by les flics), as must the VIC (ditto).

From memory, VOSA then give you a 'chit' when it passes its VIC, so you can then tax the car, but I've not been down this pathway myself (but a friend went through this process with a stolen-recovered Maestro in 2008).

This decades award for realistic ambitions in thievery goes to.... :D

I took my Astra to a VIC without an MOT/tax (but insured) in 2007. It took 15 minutes, they check for obvious damage, and the VIN numbers.

It's a good idea to get it MOT'd beforehand anyway as they go over damage (like protuding objects) before the VIC do it.

Interesting, the rules say it must have an mot if applicable and be roadworthy. I didn't know that I'd get a chit to tax it with, which makes it all even easier. The car will be repaired at a mates body shop, which is 100 miles from my house, hence the difficulties (I'm going to try and get it checked and drive it home taxed in one day).

So Autotrader price plus 10% by the time you've finished it, and it won't be worth a cup of cold piss with 'this car has been in a smash' on the logbook. Good luck with it, but the price of damaged cars is just mental unless you're very lucky.

It's about half of cap avg price, and its not something to punt on but keep.

Thanks for all the help!
