Dodgy starting

I've always thought starter motors work normally right up until they seize or die completely? Half the time when I try and start the Scrote, it acts like the battery's almost flat, the starter really labours slowly to turn the engine over. But then I can wait 2 secs, try again and it spins nicely and fires up. Is it likely to be a 'sticky' motor, or bad connections maybe? I can't imagine the battery's at fault, seems to be holding charge OK.

By way of thanks, have a picture, of a thing:

Possibly brushes on their way out, or the solonoid not engaging enough to throw enough current through.

Hit it with a hammer a couple of times. enough to dislodge stuff, but not enough to crack it

Hammers and starter motors are like fish and chips, salt and pepper, beer and fags...

Give it a pasting, they loves it.
