Help needed quite urgently please! (Not needed any more)

I've just bought an early Mk5 Escort (J reg).

 

Problem is, the battery's dead and the bonnet catch release thing is broken...

 

So, how do I open the bonnet?

Jack it up and see if you can reach the release cable from underneath, not going to be easy. You might then be able to give the cable a pull and pop the bonnet.

Assume the catch is broken where the bonnet is? If not have you tried pliers on the cable under the steering column?

Thanks guys, panic temporarily over as luckily the problem was with the bit near the actual lever thing on the steering column rather than in the engine bay. I've managed to get the bonnet open so I can get the battery out and charge/replace it, I'll try 'fixing' the release cable thing later.

 

I've only had the thing a couple of hours! How annoying.
