Mingebag alert: Morrisons offer 15p off fuel

Was rather shocked to see that yesterday when I went to Morrisons to get a bit of LPG. Instead of the usual 5-6p bollocks, they've upped the offer to 15p, which means that you can easily save a tenner in a fill-up (offer limited to 100 litres). You do need to spend £60 in the supermarket, though there's nothing stopping you from just buying all the meat on offer or a vanful of yellow-stickered bread and freezing it. Best of all for those of us driving on calor gas, you are allowed to use the voucher in a single transaction which can involve filling up with both petrol and autogas (I've done it before on the 6p off offers). I think the offer is valid till the end of next week or something, and you have a few more days to use the voucher.

My old man is always on the lookout for a bargain and they do their shopping in Morrisons every week so he takes advantage of this all the time. I on the other hand am out in the sticks with 3 BP garages to choose from with their heads together all raping me for nearly £1.40 a litre.

Well, to be fair, 6p off something that costs 135p or whatever is pretty much a gimmick. Sure, it's nice to get a bit of a discount, but there isn't much point in trying to get your bill over the threshold or going to Morrisons instead of Aldi for that week's shopping.

However, 15p off is much more worthwhile, especially in the case of LPG.

As for BP, they are always so fucking expensive that I can't quite make out how they keep their petrol stations alive. Sure, 3p extra a litre isn't a lot of money, but you aren't going to pay it if you know you're going to pass another, cheaper, garage on the way home. OTOH, their LPG prices are comical- in the M1 services, the BP stations are over 10p more expensive than Shell (and, of course, 73p to 85p is much more of a difference than 132p to 145p)!

The only possible explanation that I can think of is that they heavily rely on company car/van drivers with specific, "national average" contracts.

dont forget BP make a lot of money on moch chocca doo dahs and blueberry muffins too though

But how are you going to get you into the shop if you drive by, think 'the petrol is overpriced' and end up buying your muffins from Shell or Total?

I currently work on the checkouts @ Morrisons and have been giving them out over the last couple of days.

Fuel Britannia offer is on until 11th March. PLEASE keep hold of the receipt when you use the red voucher & show it to the peeps at the filling station. It is only for customers who have spent over £60 in store.

As an aside, Morrisons car park is great for tat spotting. Kept seeing an E reg Beige Bluebird in one of the diabled spaces (with blue badge) and a red Toyota Carina II too. :D Seems to be older jap tin more than anything.

Even 15p off a litre doesn't make a great deal of difference given the cost of fuel over the last five years or so. It's better than nothing I suppose and other discounts with single digit pence off per litre really is just adding insult to injury.

50p off per litre? Now, that would be more like it...! (pigs might fly...)

BP are ridiculously expensive around these parts. Always 3/4p more expensive than anywhere else. My nearst petrol station is a BP and I haven't been in there since I've had a driving licence. It must be at least 13/14 years since I've been in there.

The Morrisons I use most often (Saltney - Welsh end of Chester), has a couple of regular tat spots. There's an F reg Nissan Bluebird saloon in dark metallic blue which looks rather tasty and an immaculate G reg mk2 Astra five door hatch in sky blue, plus original wheel trims.

That's the 'new' Morrisons on the main road I take it, Mr Escort, did the old Co-op/Leos/Safeway finally close at the far end of River Lane?

I have a theory on BP and that that is most of their garages seem to be near bypasses and motorways where there's less opposition so they can charge what they want. Certainly the thieving bastards somewhere off the M18 were incredibly expensive when we pulled in there last year.

I blame all that 'price wars' stuff the big players started a few years back. All they had to do was drop the price to put the smaller petrol stations out of business and once they had no opposition within a mile they hiked the prices back up. It was a win-win situation for them as those closed garages weren't going to come back and people living in the sticks had to get their fuel from one of the biggies a bit further away so used more and paid more for the privelidge.

Mk5, I wish MY local BP was only 4p more expensive. It's the only place that sells LPG in the city centre. 75p a litre. Flogas (somewhere in the sticks halfway between Sheffield and Chesterfield) is 62p and Morrisons (on the edge of suburbia) 68-69p, so I have to plan all my fill-ups as part of bigger trips if I don't want to pay thirteen pence extra per litre!

Tesco did this in my town a few years ago, and they hiked the price up so high that even the fuckwits who shop in Tesco noticed. They have all forgotten now though, but I haven't.
