Standard Telephones & Cables, of New Southgate, LONDON N11. About 3 miles from where I now live, and a lot closer to where I lived in the 1980's. A very old guy, who drinks in my local worked there all his working life & was there during the war. Apparently much of their equipment was so valuable to the war effort that it was stored in the railway tunnels that ran under the site when the Germans were dropping bombs on it.

The site's since been cleared & is now "The North London Business Centre", mostly used by Barnet Council.

My Grandmother worked in STC Newtownabbey for 20 odd years as a production supervisor. They made stuff for ITT as well, and I still have an old ITT FM/MW/LW/SW radio. The thing is built like a battleship. late 70's production date.

Half of the Newtownabbey plant has been flattened, and the current tenant, Nortel Networks, is virtually dead on its feet. The plant was originally built on the edge of what was (then) the biggest housing estate in western Europe, called Rathcoole. Loads of local people worked there, and most could walk to and from work in a few minutes. The place was massive, and I have vahue recollections of being there as a very small child, at some sort of open day with my Granny

Funnily, enough, I drove past it just a few hours ago. And everyone still calls it "The Standard" :D

A bit more about it here: http://monkstownstandards.wordpress.com ... nd-cables/

I have been there a few times as I used to work for STC/Northern Telecom/BNR/Nortel Networks in Harlow before they went under
