Probably a dumb question but...........

A friend of mine is looking at a mark one 1972 Escort. It was originally an 1100 base model but has been turned into a RS2000 replica c/w 2000cc engine, new gearbox, lowered, blah blah blah!!

He was saying that he got a car insurance quote of £137 this is what made me wonder so I checked the DVLA site and it states that it has a 1300cc engine, so presumably the log book hasn't been changed to reflect its current status as a 2000.

I said that he should tread carefully and that quite simply the guy is just trying to get cheap insurance etc by not informing the DVLA.

I assume this is correct and that it is simply a case of the DVLA having to be informed on any changes and that any insurance would be void if he did buy it and tried running it as a 1300?

Sorry for the stupid questions but I just wanted to make sure of the facts as is very excited about getting it and I think I may have just burst his bubble!!

How much is he paying for the car?

The problem is if it's Hiabbed he'll get very little back.

Thanks WTC thats a good point.

It is for sale for 8k, I have no knowledge of these or what they are worth! I have heard all about the the Ford scene tax obviously I thought 8k seemed a lot for what only is a replica but looking around it seems about standard.

DVLA states that it has a 1300cc engine

I'm confused!

But basically, his insurance will be null and void and he will have wasted £137.

If you are going to tell lies on that scale then you might as well not bother insuring it.

Just tell the insurance that it's got a 2.0 in, as long as they know, the data on the DVLA file is not important really.

Ideally he'd tell the DVLA it's got a bigger engine in, but since they now want receipts for the fitting of new engine and various other hoops jumping through just so you can give them more money for tax, they can bloody whistle for all I care.

It's a classic, and I bet you could get mega cheap insurance on it even with the 2.0 and other mods declared if he says he only does 8 miles a year and has access to 15 other cars or whatever. I paid <£300 at 24 years old on a mini with every performance mod you can think of, and it was my daily driver.

No way would an insurance company pay £8k for an 1100 base. Insuring it properly probably wouldn't cost the earth as modified Escorts are big business.

I am confused too!! I assume that at some point it had the engine changed to a 1300cc which was declared.

I personally would try and find one that has been properly registered!!

Thanks all for your replies I have passed your advice and comments onto him.

If I had 8k I would buy a fleet of Maxi's!!
