Luxobarges_Are_Us Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 After the little episode of clutch overheating last week, I checked prices for clutch kits etc, and I have found parts that ostensibly fit the 2.3 that are both good old single flywheel and DMF. Even the technical gods at the Scorpio forum don't seem totally sure about the issue, and it seems like neither Ford dealers do. http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/ya ... 1151649885 Needless to say, I am rather worried by the possibility of having to spend hundreds on the bloody thing. Is there any way of finding which set-up I've got without dismantling it, and would it be possible to replace a DMF with an old-fashioned clutch?
Luxobarges_Are_Us Posted October 18, 2011 Author Posted October 18, 2011 On reading that thread from the Scorpio forum, I would not be in the least surprised if it turned out to be about my very own car. There can't have been too many 2.3 manual Scorpios running on LPG in the Northeast, where the previous owner had bought it from.
scaryoldcortina Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 The easy way to find out is to ring a motor factors (Andrew Page would probably do) with your registration number and price a clutch set. The parts computer will know which sort your car has. FWIW, DMFs are rare on petrol cars, and rarer pre 1999, but you do hear internet stories about them....
meggersdog Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 That will be a normal standard clutch,DMF's were only originally fitted to diesels.Reading between the lines on that forum I think perhaps the Mr Clutch in question dropped the gearbox and damaged it.They were quoting for a DMF to cover the cost of something they broke.
Pete-M Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 It should be possible to replace the DMF with a traditional flywheel although I don't see why a 2.3 Scorpio would need one with being a pretty smooth, balancer shaft equipped, petrol one. I'm not 100% certain but I don't think the 2.3 Galaxy had a DMF and cant think why the Scorpio would.
tonedepear Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 That thread's hard going. From reading it, sounds like calling a ford specialist or better still a tame main dealer with your vin number should tell you whether yours has a DMF or not. Should be able to fit a normal flywheel with minimal fuss though if they sold them both ways anyway. Does yours show evidence of having night rider lights? That'd be a big clue if it's yours or not in the 2006 thread! Also, don't go to Mr Clutch.
Luxobarges_Are_Us Posted October 19, 2011 Author Posted October 19, 2011 Right, it's definitely a DMF assembly, confirmed with the VIN and all. They even fitted it in the 2 litre version past a certain date- crazy overengineering as the engine is quite smooth and the MT75 gearbox is IMO one of the best manual 'boxes of the nineties (better than anything non-Japanese) if not of EVAH. However, they're sold as separate parts and the parts guy at the dealer reckons that the (eye-wateringly expensive) extra flywheel doesn't wear out very easily. I'll just keep an eye on it and see how long it lasts and cross the bridge when it actually shows more persistent signs of wear.
scaryoldcortina Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 Hey, if you want a second hand flywheel let me know! I can also throw in a servicable but part worn clutch assembly
Luxobarges_Are_Us Posted October 19, 2011 Author Posted October 19, 2011 well *crossing fingers*, I haven't had any trouble with it ever since (although I have noticed a very small metallic sound every time I press the clutch pedal) but, if you have the space to keep it, I may well take you up on it in a couple of months or whenever it ends up in a ball of fire (which will probably be five minutes after you've chucked everything into a skip).
scaryoldcortina Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 I never throw stuff away! Besides, I think I have at least two or three DOHC flywheels lying around.
Luxobarges_Are_Us Posted October 19, 2011 Author Posted October 19, 2011 Great stuff, considering I don't have any storage at all. Have you got lots of other Scorpio bits stashed away? I may be needing an alternator (although they don't seem too expensive to buy new) and an aircon compressor (that's far pricier- around 250 quid!) within the next 2-3 months.
scaryoldcortina Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 I might, I'll have a look, although I suspect all the aircon compressors went in the irony ally bin. I deal mostly with conversions and no-one bothers fitting aircon! I can always save you one off the next donor though.
Luxobarges_Are_Us Posted October 19, 2011 Author Posted October 19, 2011 Yeah, keep an eye for one. It's one thing paying 100 pounds for a brand new alternator, and quite another when it's 250 plus the regassing for the compressor.
