The Moog Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 Took out the new van which is LPG'd up. I have been running it on petrol because when I swapped it over to gas it would stall at anything above idle. Ran about 80 miles on motorway then when up to temp I swapped. Still same issue. I then switched it to gas and let it idle for about 4 minutes before trying again and it seemed happy enough. Excellent. But no it wont go back to petrol now, as soon as I switch it over it stalls. Engine is a 1.9 Carb and the name on the switch is Emmegas. It also doesnt show the level of LPG so thinking of changing it. Any idea what it might be? Is it DIY able or am I better off someone doing it? Also I assume it hasnt been serviced, is this needed?
andrew e Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 Get a new tank filter, and inline filter first - cut one in half and look at the shite that falls out! Then see if it works, could be anything. Google the system name, see what comes out. I guess its a factory conversion? What type of van?
The Moog Posted October 1, 2011 Author Posted October 1, 2011 I think that it is a DIY job (both install and the van) but looks to a good level. Is a T25 van.
andrew e Posted October 1, 2011 Posted October 1, 2011 swap some relays round, see what happens? If its stuck on one or the other. I had a DG motor'd T25 which buggered about till I purchased a new carb "pull down unit" for the pierburg fitted. Stopped all the rough running. http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/index.php?p ... t&Itemid=3 Chugging from cold, Choke pull down unit. DG engine, 1.9l waterboxer with pierburg 2E3 carburetor. The choke pull down unit lessens the amount of choke when the engine is revved, if it goes faulty then you are left with an engine that chugs from cold, you sometimes have to rev it really hard to clear it. Sometimes the engine will cut out as its getting too much choke and the engine is getting over fueled. Remedy is to replace the faulty choke pull down unit which can be identified by removing the air filter trunking from the carburetor, the choke pull down unit is the black plastic disc shaped object which is held in place by a small rawl pin, it has a vacuum pipe going to it.
The Moog Posted October 1, 2011 Author Posted October 1, 2011 Yep mine i s DG as well. Been a bit hesitant on the throttle at times especially when cold. Might have to invest in that then. Got loads of little things to do to it, but really need to get the LPG thing fixed first.
Des Posted October 2, 2011 Posted October 2, 2011 Gower and Lee keep those pull down things, 01923 247300.There's probably a filter on the lpg side as well that's worth changing for peace of mind, usually in the line to the big vapouriser thing near the engine, in a combined solenoid filter bowl wotsit. The vapouriser as well can need a clean here and there, I've found the pre filter bowl collects brown powdery crap that can bung it eventually, and the vap collects stinky sticky gorilla snot, this is apparently the stenching agent that's added to gas to give it it's familiar pong. It's also present in the Katie Price branded perfume, 'Fish heads & Despair' or whatever it's called.Switching fuels on carb engines carries an extra challenge, you switch from petrol to gas and until the carb float chamber empties, the engine will be getting both fuels and stall from running rich, switch from gas to petrol and engine gets nothing until the float chamber fills. There should be electronic delay or timer circuits somewhere to counter this, probably in the changeover switch box, with an adjustment/s to fiddle with.I'm going to convert similar whenever I get time, under the back seat is currently filled with junk and looks a good place to squeeze a 70l tank, and I want to add a small 20l underneath to run the cooker so I free up the space taken by the stupid and expensive little blue cylinders. I'll go against convention and set up the system to start on gas, done this before and found it works fine even on the coldest days. No cold petrol bore washing FTW.
The Moog Posted October 2, 2011 Author Posted October 2, 2011 Cheers Des that might be the issue. On the back of the switch is a delay to allow filling I think it varies between 1 - 4 seconds. Will adjust that and see if it helps.
The Moog Posted October 2, 2011 Author Posted October 2, 2011 Put switch back to the middle and let it fill carb then it roared into life I am not used to Carbs as have always been dealing with FI. Cheers Des
