Any Saab experts ?? problem with key fob

HI - Hope someone can help for a good friend of mine. He has a 1998 'R' reg Saab 900 S 2.3 petrol

It has a standard key and a remote key fob that turns the immobilisor off.

Now he's had it a while now with no issues but it's just stopped working and the key fob wont turn the immobilisor off. It will start with the key but turns off pretty much straight away.

He's been quoted £120 for a new key fob but they wont guarentee it will work, It's imobile at his house so he cant easily get it anywhere.

Is this a known problem? any known fixes? can he fit an ecu from an earlier one to bypass the code or can it be bepassed on the original ECU. He really wants to keep the car but dosnt trust the dealers or local mechanic.

Any help greatly appreciated - or help pointing me/him in the right direction

It's a fairly common issue.

Basically, all key fobs on Saabs go eventually - I've had a 1997 one which did this three times. My current 2006 9-3's done it once.

What I did was to get my local Saab specialist to re-program one I'd bought from eBay. Total cost about £10 for the fob, £25 for the re-program.

And always have a spare!

At least you're in a hotbed of Saab specialists up there. There's at least 2 in Huddersfield and Aeromotive are in Batley IIRC. 8)

To be honest the Saab is one model i know very little about and one of the few manufacturers that I've never owned one of their products !! I'll check out the Batley company as i'm passing there tomorrow - cheers

I use Aeromotive - who are in Batley/Birstall. Phil & Phil there know what they're doing - they usually have a for TVR's hanging about, along with the Porsche/Ferrari guy next door.
