pompei Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 Probably should be in teh Stoopid Question Amnesty but here goes - how can I remove the sticky residue from masking tape that probably had a recommended 3 hours tack? Don't want to try petrol/thinners/acetone/bleach/ cillit bang without previous advice in case it lifts the paint from the otherwise *immaculate* Fronty ...
warren t claim Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 Heat it with a hair dryer and it should just rub off easily.
cobblers Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 I have to remove this kind of residue from paint pretty much daily, and I just steam in with normal cheapo 2k thinners on some cheapo blue roll paper. I use this for almost any cleaning job cos its cheaper to buy than anything else (£18 for 25 litres which lasts forever) and it gets the oil out from under my fingernails eventually.Unless the paint is already shafted, or quite fresh (a couple of days for 2k or a couple of weeks for celly) a quick wipe with 2k thinners won't do it any harm. Make sure you test it on a hidden area, and don't absolutely soak the area and leave it wet for ages. Brake cleaner gets masking tape residue off dead easy too, and is less likely to wipe your paint off, but it's more expensive so I generally don't use it. Soapy water does eventually get it off, but thinners or brake cleaner smell better and work fast.
Station Posted July 28, 2011 Posted July 28, 2011 Carb Cleaner has always worked for me. It takes a while for it to remove paint in my experience. The trick is to apply, then rub off and keep doing that. It reacts with the glue. It's never taken paint off for me, though try somewhere inconspicuous first.
