What to do??

I currently have a 1988 2 litr 740 which is to become my winter car when the sherpa is off the road.

 

I have owned 850s in the past and my partner currently has a V70.

 

I had to spend £500 last year to get it through its MOT and i know it will need new front pads and disks this year, There is also slight coolant loss (thinking K seal) i need the throttle body cleaned and the cold start injector checked. The fuel pump is noisy and it struggles to restart when warm (not hot) needs gas to start when cold. it also has a bit of piston slap.

 

On the good side, it doesn’t use any oil, never broke down in a five hundred mile trip last year (which the camper would have never made!) and is lovely and comfy with plenty of space for all my research equipment.

 

So i think i am looking at around another four hundred to get it running as i would want. I will be carrying out a lot of research next year across the country for my post doc research and obviously am on a very tight budget.

 

I don’t know whether to bite the bullet and pay out for it and fingers crossed that will be it for a few years or do i trade it in for another car and hope that it will be relatively trouble free?

Better the devil you know?

If £400 gets it running how it should be (i.e the piston slap as that would appear to be the big worry of the things that need doing) then it has to be worth doing.

I think your final point (' do i trade it in for another car and hope that it will be relatively trouble free? ') says it all really.

 

You could guff a few hundred quid at another car and it could be absolutely rubbish and demand all your spare time and money. That's the gamble of old cars I suppose though at least it's usually fun.
