re: 406 HDI 2.2 engine

Despite all the warnings about this engine from this site, I'm currently assisting my brother-in-law on the purchase of a 2002 406 HDI 2.2 Estate manual from a dealer. The Peugeot main dealer tells me there won't be this FAP filter (which is the problem thing, right?) on this age of car, could anyone confirm this?

Is there anything obvious to look for to see any signs of impending doom on the car?

Peugeot also tell me the cambelt change interval is 96,000 miles or 10 years, which I find hard to believe is sensible.

Cheers!

Depends

Is it the 2.0 16v? or the 2.0 8v?

The 8v will go to 100k - though personally I wouldnt leave it past 72K

the 16v has an additional chain driven cam off the belt driven one and will lunch itself at the 50k mark.

FAP was a bit hit and miss, some cars came with them, some didnt - they attracted a tax break.

Fr' instance my 2.0HDi 16v is FAP-free, but I looked at an identical year and spec C8 which had a FAP.

If on the other hand its the 2.2 HDi RUN AWAY!

It's the 2.2.

Can't really run away now as we've bought it!!

As far as I know the 2.2 always has a FAP, though it can be disabled / removed. I have the tools to do it.

There does appear to be a problem with cambelts on the 2.2 and I'm not exactly sure what the issue is. The inter-cam chain is oil pressure tensioned so lack of servicing might be an issue. 50k miles seems like a maximum to me but if the chain is the issue it won't help. No one seems to know for sure.

Also the C8/807 had issues that water could get into and collect in the cam belt area. This doesn't affect the 406.

When the belt breaks on an 8 valve it usually results in a few rocker arms breaking which isn't a big deal. On the 2.2 the problem is that to get to the rockers the inlet manifold has to come off. The injectors go through the inlet manifold and often get stuck.

I have started dripping oil down the side of the injectors every service in the hope that if/when they need to come out they will.

There is a common problem with the alternator belt shredding the inner edge. The shredded piece more often than not finds it's way behind the cambelt cover.Very quickly it gets underneath the crank sprocket resulting in the cambelt jumping a few teeth.

Next time I do a belt I'll have to see how much clearance there is between the hole in the belt cover and the alternator drive pulley. Maybe the space between them is too big. Maybe it would be possible to fit a metal plate with a smaller hole in so that it would be harder for a foreign object to get into the belt cover or something.

A nice reminder to change the alternator belt before it fails.

I've seen this three times and only on the 2.1 HDi.The second time my neighbour (at the time) towed his Peugeot to the main dealer. They diagnosed crank and cam sensors out of sync.He replaced both sensors and still the car wouldn't go.Next he got a mobile diagnostics guy to look at it who described the same fault. After replacing the new cam sensor he finally asked me.

I spotted the shredded alternator belt straight away. The original diagnosis was correct but the problem was mechanical not electrical.
