Hello and why does my 405 wobble!?

Afternoon all.

Been surfing round in here for ages so thought would make our relationship formal, so to speak and join up.

Now, why oh why does my '93 Peugeot 405 STDT (nice name) estate wobble when under power turning left?

Glad I only paid £150 for her and all the MOT needed was free fettling and sorting the ABS light with a new fuse

I've replaced all the lower are bushes, different wheels (1.9 GTi a la 309 Goodwood), new tyres, new CV joints new discs pads and stripped all shafts and rebuilt. All new engine mounts. Had tracking done. Had it up on two poster and had a ex Quaife engineer jiggle and pry bar it to see if anything loose.

ONly hting he spotted was a weak spring inner end passenger side drive shaft, so all stripped of a scrapper and used stronger longer spring, still wobbles.

Now question is does anyone have a schematic of the driveshafts cos I don't know if there's a spring where the tripod joint goes into inner half of the o/side drive shaft.

Oh what a carry on for a nice day, sorry!

All the best.

Is that like a torque steer wobble? It could be the anti roll bar bushes which are a PITA to replace.

Hmmm good call Mr H.

It doesn't feel like a steering wobble but like the engine/transmission twisting itself in knots or a wheel trying to climb on itself if that makes sense!!

Thanks for your thoughts.

Does it feel like it's resisting you when you steer? It sounds like a problem with the inner CV joint to me. They sometimes suffer from uneven wear, which can often be seen on inspection.

Yes but not too bad as power steering. I've got the inner CV from the scrapper, I know the bit you mean, the three slots the tripod bearings run in. Could be why it seems to tramline like a tyres flat too. Will try swapping that too...TO BE CONTINUED

Sussed it.

Offside 'long' drive shaft had play in middle tripod joint.

The 'right' amount of left hand down let it flap about and as it runs through a bracket carrying the engine mount it was lobbing the engine about too!

Seek and te shall find, young sir. My boss has an old 190e and complained or persistant wobolling. I took it out, and it was quite bad. Took at it out local tyre molestors, who took one look at the rear tyres and fell about laughing. Tread looked ago, sidewalls were a little cracked, but not bad..............until you looked closely, and you can see that the two components were rapidly parting company. Aparently, the firm that made the rear tyres that were on there went out of business 17 years ago..............
