Quick insurance question

Do any of you know an insurance company that'll consider insuring a car which will also be used as part of a documentary (one day's filming)?

To clarify, separate insurance would be in force during the shoot, so no insurance needed for that, I just need a company/broker that will provide normal cover for the rest of the year without having a massive eppy when filming gets mentioned.

(Someone who answers the phone on Saturdays would be good).

That's an excellent question, and in hindsight that's what I would (or rather wouldn't) have done, but that particular cat is out of the bag with the current insurer, and they point blank refuse to have anything to do with it. In the unlikely event of a claim etc. etc. I'd rather not be with an insurer with such an attitude, because then I'd be bollocksed (dual insurance etc.).

Doesn't matter. I wouldn't even bother to disclose it unless you were, somehow, doing it full time.

Is it being paid for by the filming company?. Thats where the Insurance company may use the not for hire or reward clause in the policys. I would be a bit wary here.

Yes, it is. But that's not the problem as I understand it. There will be insurance in place for the filming, the problem is finding an insurer who'll suspend their policy for the duration of filming - a couple of hours. And I've found that most are unwilling to do this. I can't see how this causes any real increased exposure to risk for them, so I assume it's either underwriter's fear or can't-be-arsedness.

Why do you need to suspend cover? I'm a journo, covered to drive other cars, but the owner doesn't have to withdraw their own insurance while I'm at the wheel.

I had assumed that the insurance in this case would work along similar lines.

One of the reasons I've been given is that to not suspend my policy would result in having OMG DUAL INSURANCE. This could be avoided easily if the insurers were willing to talk (the film co.'s broker has suggested this) but my current company has flatly refused to do so. I've spoken to a couple of people who work in insurance and their view is that this is ridiculous - but that's how it is.

Honestly I wouldn't worry about it. It's not that big a deal.

Get back to your insurer & tell them thanks for pointing out all the problems,

you'd not considered all of this

so you'll no longer be involved in the filming thing

it's just not worth the hassle etc

Then get on & do it

and be covered by the film-makers insurance

In the very unlikely event of an incident

Claim on the film insurance

& don't ever mention it to your own insurer.

If it's written off

continue not to tell your insurer

just tell them you've swapped cars

Otherwise, have an enjoyable day and life will continue to go on.
