Boxer engine

After that lengthy discussion elsewhere about what and when constituted a boxer engine, I learnt of one that can be described as nothing else last night.

Two pistons per bore, working in opposite directions from the same crankshaft, with the combustion chamber half way up the bore. The stroke of the upper pistons was made slightly shorter to compensate for the extra weight of their conrod/rocking bar arrangement and so all reciprocal forces were naturally balanced.

Look for Gobron-Brille if you want to see more.

Isn't that the same principle as the Rootes TS3 and Deltic? It is bonkers, and sounds very peculiar.

Similar, the Deltic has 3 crankshafts, and is a 2 stroke diesel.

I was under the impression that a boxer was so called, as the pistons push out, rather like a boxer!

These push in.......

I've just had another look at it - see what you mean AR. That's ingenious!

Boxer is an odd designation for a flat engine. How many boxers bunch straight out to the sides?
