Yeah, we can do that... Well done Farina, for selling the same set of drawings to two manufacturers! Interesting to see what both customers then did with the goods.

Tayne

you do realise that in it's day the 404 was considered nearly as good off road as a Land Rover?

Apparantly they were popular with vets for that reason

I know you like your 4x4s an all.....

I knew they were rugged and ideal for dirt roads but I suspect that's wishful thinking on someone's part.

Not wishful thinking at all, they were one of France's great family cars (imho)

Three! Fiat got them as well.

I'm not having a go but when you start to consider approach/departure/break-over angles, suspension travel, low range gearing etc than I'd take the Land Rover when proper off-road.

I'd be happy in the Pug on a dirt track though.

They did pretty well in the Safari Rallies, didn't they?

maybe not "nearly as good as", but more accurately "best thing short of"

In other words back in the 50s when it was no product between an ordinary car and a Land Rover that the 404 was as good as you could get of the ordinary cars.

Certainly my 504 was a lot more capably in on rough/slippery ground than any other RWD cars I've driven. It had pretty high ground clearance for a car, long suspension travel and it was tough. It seemed to have pretty good traction as well.

The Celica GT-4 also did well on the Safari Rally

Still highly unlikely to make it to places a Land Rover can though.

For serious off-roading a Landy is always a good bet, despite the relative lack of rally success.

Having said that, there's always the Paris-Dakar rally to consider:
