New shite collected - 454 mile round trip

Well as some of you know I have a perversion for the 80's FWD Mitusbishi Lancer and this is now my third !!!!

This started when I was struggling to find parts for my gold one (bought off MikeD) on here. I thought it would be a good idea to buy a spares car, found one on ebay for a tadge over £200 but when I got it it was mint (well mint for me) and far too good to break so this did not solve the parts problem but added to it !!

Then via OJC forum a chap posted another Lancer saloon auto exactly the same as mine (it's only a few numbers off the chassis number) for £100 taxed and tested but due to condition i wasn't tempted, but sent a PM non the less. I bit of too and fro and deal was done for one Lancer saloon in exchange for 24 cans of lager. Tom the seller even agreed to keep the tax on for me so that I could drive it home so long as I posted the tax back to him (in the post as we speak)

Tried various sites to get temp cover but all charging far too much, eventually found a policy for a tenner - bargin where back on course.

so this is the offending article

Only problem was it was 200 miles away and Tom said that it drove like a pig but it would be fine once I got it on the motorway, so me being mad and an even madder mate set off yesterday morning from damp Wakefield at 8.30am and set off for Toms' some 200 miles away just north of London. We arrived at around 12.30 (traffic was not good on way down) there was a crash at meadowhall which I later found out involved my mates Audi !!! but thats another story (all ok)

Anyways we arrive and see the Lancer in a nice little garage, we checked the levels and topped us as necessary, it started first time but was as lumpy as hell, It sounded like it was choking up. I tried a little tinkering but to no avail. We exchanged log book and said lager and decided to chance it home. After about a mile it stalled and refused to start - bugger what the feck have I done !!!! anyways it restarted and managed to get to a fuel station but twat me put premium unleaded in (bugger) that was dear but sod it this was going to be it's last drink so might as well go out in style..

So onto M40 and headed north back to proper country :D and passed this on the way a mint Zephyr 4 Mk3 - i suspect off to the NEC

Unbekown to me my mate who was driving the lancer was having problems (I found out later it was missing like a good un) He floored it passed me and at one point I swear he may have broken the 70 speed limit by a couple of miles per hour (honest)

He seemed happy sitting at 70 so that was the speed we stuck at, I had to switch my air vents off on my astra disler as it was filling with fumes and a little bit later on the exhaust dropped on the lancer (it was blowing anyway and was clearly loose) to within inches of the floor - more panic set in ..

By this time the rain had stopped, started and stopped again, we'd done about 40 miles of motorway by this time and all seemed well (or it did in my astra !!!)

Things started to brighten up

so the planned route was M40, M42, A42, M1, M18, M62 (i was dropping car off at Selby) I was bursting for a jimmy riddle at this point but decided not to stop for fear of issues. My mate was getting close to the M42 junction and he didnt know which lane to go in etc, (can be confusing with the M6toll) he put his hazards on - was this a problem or did he want me to pass. I chanced it and overtook him and he just wanted me to take the lead. I stuck at 70 as we had done for a good long while

I nice later Colt then overtook us

Wonder what he thought of the Lancer - ehm I wonder !!

Back on track and luckily no traffic yet, all was going smoothly, I decided not to chance the A1 as it's a shite road, so stuck the M18 which was quite quite but it was getting dark, couldn't mistake the Lancers side lights and seperate lights in my mirror - I must have looked back more than I did forward !! onto M62 nice and smooth and then long stretch to the A19 for Selby. I could see my mate was leaving plenty of gap as I knew if he stopped that would be it. but he managed it ok and only a few miles to go. It's great to have the pressure eased that you know even if it breaks down now it wouldnt be bad to get home and your off the sodding motorway. Pulled up outside my mates yard and as my mate swung it into the yard it stalled and refused to restart, so last few feet saw it pushed into the yard, tax disc removed and it sits there now awaiting it's fate. Both me and mate where bursting for a gee wizz and my mate wasn't home so we chanced it at the side of the road but took ages as we hadn't been for ages -- you had to be there or not as the case may be !!! luckily it's a quite road. but much relife was passed ..

The lancer managed exactly 199 miles on it's last journey, I suspect the problem was just a blocked carb and i'm sure a strip and clean would sort it. but it has some great spares for mine including a door mirror, door and 2 wings along with various other bits that will be salvaged (Tom knows it will be broken he's just happy someone can use the parts and he knew if it went to the scrap yard it would be just flattened)

I eventually got home about 6.15pm having done 454 miles on 3/4 tank of fuel in my 08 plate Astra

Best bit was when we dropped it off my mate (who luckily is still my mate) said that it was the worst journey he ever took however he said the ride was great and really smooth, just the engine was the issue. I dropped him off and headed home where my wife and made the most amazing beef madras curry with all the trimming - ACE !!

SO if anyone wants any spares for a Lancer / Colt let me know. Nothing dear I just want to recover the costs for fuel and insurance

Thats 3 Lancer GLX autos now - there cant be that many in the country..

quality !

but where you been in that astra in the last 2 years!

I do a lot of miles with work (understatement) It's going back soon as new car on order (a Focus) will be a cheap motor for someone as i mostly do motorway driving going to Hull / Grimsby and the like..

All my other cars are pretty low mileage, my Capri has only done 4,000 miles in 8 years !! so just a mileage muncher on the company shed..

That was a quality shite journey.

It makes my Leeds - Derby effort seem a bit dismal

although I can't give a mileage because

the odometer wasn't working - for which I claim a bonus 80 miles.

Nice touch though,

getting your mate

to drive the shitter

He's not insured to drive my disler and would be too expensive to put him on, i'd love to have gone down in one of his motors (a lovely X reg Mk2 Cav GL or a F reg Festa Ghia) but he was happy me putting even more mileage on the Astra  he loves it really. I've realised that all 3 Lancers he's gone with me and brought em back  he's not a fan of jap stuff though but he puts up with my obsession for owt obscure. He draws the line at owt BL though, so i might need to find someone to drive the Ital estate i've been craving for many a year :!:
