There were a couple of times that multiple random shit happened.. I found that disconnecting the battery for a couple of hours worked (sometimes...)

Sounds like a good buy. We inherited our 1991 940 turbo estate (with the magic overdrive button) from my girlfriend's father - an antique dealer, a couple of years ago. We've have had almost trouble-free motoring (the only trouble being finding a space to park in our overcowded teraced street!). Granted it's not the most economical car on the roads, but the part time man-with-a-volvo removals service make up for that!

What engine did they use in the 740 estates? I was quite impressed with one when I had to drive from Ipswich to Cambridge one night to pick one up. It was an automatic and when you floored it at 110 it kicked down a gear. I made quite good time on that trip, with the 1.6 Maestro automatic on the way up and the Volvo on the way back, 90 minutes in total.

I really really wanted a turbo estate with manual box, but pre catalytic converter.

Mine's a 2.3 which makes 132bhp but it seems to have loads of torque, enough to pull about 55mph at 2000 revs in overdrive

lovejoy only had a volvo in series one and it was always breaking down

Really? Must have been one of those 240s rather than the elegant 740

Think it was a 265 Lovejoy drove - when are you getting the optional roof-rack (OMG Ratlook) and chest of drawers to go on top?

Ah! 265 - dodgey renner 6 cyl engine - never a big seller due to the fragility of the said unit compared to the indestructibility of the B20 and B23 Engine commonly found in the 200

THE most indestructible has to be the pushrod B18 as found in the 140/145 and the P1800 - wonderful roarty block of iron - and it is a P1800 that holds the world milage redcord for a private car and is still running with its original B18 block

Ws that the 240 estate GLT? It looks class!! I could not be depressed if I owned that car.

I love that! Bet the problem is something really simple but obscure, it should make good money on the bay, too.

frickin nightmare with the missfire.

I spent 400 quid chasing a missfire in a 1991 960 Turbo (eatly 960 with a fourpot turbo) - in the end I sold the car for 200 quid to a vicar who had the time to chase the problem - tracked it after 3 weeks to a dodgey wire running to one of the injectors.

I've got a number of similar issues with my Torslanda at the moment - the only way to actually check what is going on is to put a diagnostic into the ECU and read to e codes - probably far more likely to be a faulty ignition module/crank case sensor or O2 sensor - the lifespan of all three is now about the age of your car.

The biggest problem with the 20 year old late 80's and 90's volvers seems to be ignition component related - superb mechanicals which last for years but the ignition system is easily forgotten and needs constant cleaning at age. Mind you - most other cars would have disintegrated by now.

The first thing to do is to get the contact cleaner out and a toothbrush and scrub EVERY socket and plug you can find and then cover in WD40 - its amazinf how this can actually solve the problem....if it persists then I would bite the bullet and take it to a specialist who will be able to isolate the problem pretty quickly.

Trying to chase it yourself without the specialist kit is a bit like buying lottery tickets!

It's amazing the number of times I've fixed EMS issues with this approach. You sometimes read folk on here commenting that modern cars are crap to work on because of all the electrics, but I find that fixing electrical issues/EMS issues is as much fun as fixing mechanical issues. But then I have a qualification in electrical engineering

A second trick with faulty ems is to unplug one by one any components you can access. Often the EMS control unit will default to a predetermined mapping when you run the car with a sensor or actuator missing. So you might find the car runs better with (for example the lambda sensor) a component unplugged. This improves the odds that that is the component at fault or the component that has faulty wiring.

I have a '53 Volvo V40. Not very shite, sorry. I can however assure you the performance is miserable on account of the 1.6l engine.

(I could add this to the communal list but it wouldn't 'belong')
