Odd. This is both deeply depressing and at the same time rather funny.

 

Depressing in that it seems 90% of the threads on this here forum are utter rubbish, with replies to virtually every fuggin post by some living, breathing spambot who is way beyond fucked up. Thing is, I can't be arsed reading through all this to see if there is anything of interest. I was rather hoping normality might have returned. I've been up since 4am, driven 570 miles today and was looking forward (a bit) to reading something sensible on here. Looks like I'll have to head over to RR then

 

And yet funny. Because E Raymanboy Jnr is obviously mad as a bag of kittens and some of the replies are just, well, OMG!

Completely ignoring about a dozen posts...

 

I replaced a 1976 Marina 1.8 saloon with a 1975 Dolomite 1850 back in, oh, 1988. Reason: because I stuffed the Marina up the backside of a Fiat in heavy traffic and pissing rain. Strictly speaking both of these were officially my parents' cars, but I drove considerable mileages in both. Dolomite was compact, comfortable, powerful and felt solid. Marina was huge, heavy and felt loosely flung together. But after the crash it did get rebuilt (using parts from my old Coupe) and lived on for about 2 years! I even painted it (by brush, Easter 1988). Several other cars feature in the story over this period, by the way.

 

The Marina did its job, which was getting me to work in the morning and home again later; it was adequate in most respects for normal suburban family life. So was the Dolomite, but if I got a chance to open it up a bit, it responded much better. Unfortunately it was a bit low to the ground for caravan-towing.

 

However! I replaced the Dolomite with a 1981 Daihatsu Charade, yes the little one; original shape with round headlights. 3 cylinders, 993cc, 5 speed box. What a barrel of fun that was! Totally lively engine, handling as good as the Dolomite but lighter, seats nearly as comfy, and huge mpg. Now there's one I'd repeat, and I know of two lying around over here...
