Old Looking Engines

Recommended Posts

I've been reading a few articles on engine swaps recently and got to wondering if there are any newish engines that manage to look older, along the lines of the Zetec with a fake Lotus Twincam rocker cover or the Datsun Sunny engine being a more modern version of the BMC A seies....

MX5 can be quite well disguised  Remove the lettering from the cam cover, stick a pair of carbs on the side instead of the injection, sprinkle liberally with period looking components and everyone will think you've got a Fiat/Lancia/Lotus/other twin cam.

There is a kit-car that uses a Bavarian V12 with Lamborghini machined into the cam covers - does that count?

pmsl, you can take a zetec, leave all the badges (that say zetec...) with the standard EFI and simply by placing it in a Mk2 cortina suddenly everyone thinks it's a lotus. I kid you not, if I had a penny for every time.....(I'd have 27p)

Well, its not my fault Lotus did it already in Mk2 Cortinas! People are stupid  I'm quite proud that I overheard one person suggest mine was a Riley lump though :D

Seth, do you have a copy of all the stuff that was in retro about your car?, I read the first issue but never saw the rest...

Third "episode" is in the shops at the moment. I don't really feel it would be right to go through everything from the articles until a while after they've been out. I will put up more/different info online but not until its all done with in print. I took over 1000 photos of the process!

Cool, as I am planning a couple of projects up and that looks an interesting set up 8) a bit like the idea of a carbed zetec

SOC, did you use the original ECU and did you wire it up yourself?

You what? For God's sake, I'm nineteen and a half YEARS old, not months old... and I've never seen it in the metal. Never been west of the Atlantic either.

Good for you.. I stopped adding fractions to my age when i was about 13, by 19 I'd grown a sense of humour too.

WVM, yes, the zetec is on the standard mondeo ECU and engine loom. I didn't actually fit this one - it's the car from the legendary "saturday in the garage with a 16v mk2" thread on BSC, I bought it as an unfinished project.

Seems that in fact you are.

Congratulations on another great piece of self pwning!

A cynic might say that I set an almost intentional trap there.

Yeah, sorry, I'd forgotten about the existence of Mercury... I think most Brits/Europeans would think M-B if someone said Merc to them.

Sorry, I know the fractions bit is rather pedantic, and, believe it or not, I do have a sense of humour when I'm not having to watch my back constantly for the next attack...

Use your sense of humour - and expect to be tested and wound-up until you wind your neck in a wee bit, huh?
