My 1968 Sceptre currently has these plates:

As you can see, for some reason the spacing of the 'G' seems to have gone a bit tits up, and I'd like to replace them. Now I must be getting old, because at one time the first thing I'd do when I got a pre '73 motor was wang on a set of pressed black 'n' silver plates, 'because I could'. But now I'd like to get some original style ones. But what would it have had? I've seen plenty of period photos of cars up to 'K' reg (72) with black and white plates, but I've had 'G' platers with white/yellow reflective plates...

Your thoughts please...

I have printed and dated evidence to proved that the reflective yellow/white plates were fitted from 1968...... also that the black and silver ones were fitted up till 1973...

I would go for the reflective gold striped on black background perspex "show" plates.....

Think that white and yellows were standard fit from about 66/67 onwards, black and silvers are usually retro fits but very few cars from the mid 60's onwards would have been supplied with dealer fitted black and silvers

It is likely that the dealer would have supplied them with the "new" reflective plates, but it also wouldn't have been completely daft to dish them out with the old style ones, as many did.

So it's up to you!

I had a set of these made up, I thought they were nice:

but a tad expensive and I'd have preferred the 3 and the 9 to be rounder.

My Oxford (Mid 1970) was dealer fitted with Black/Silver (separate riveted digit) plates.

The Herald (registered Jan 71) was dealer fitted with reflective yellow/white separate digit plates.

The Minx, is wearing quite possibly its origional plates which are pressed allor Black/Silver.

So fit what you like. Anything other than modern plastic ones would be "correct"

They're not bad, but I don't think they had the raised edge on the plate. From what I remember the plates were flat and always really wavy.

Personally I'd go for the same as you've already got. Separate letter plates always look more classy than a pair of ten quid pressed ally ones. I went for white instead of silver letters on my Triumph 1300 and they look really nice.

For a pre-73 I'd usually tend to go silver/white on black but it depends on the car. The white and yellow versions Louise showed us are spot on if you go that route.
