R 12 OIL LEAK

Recommended Posts

Hi.

My r12 has developed an oil leak. I have borrowed this pic from internet, the oil leak is in the circled area. The leak is around the little metal thingie.

Your suggestions to stop the leak are more than welcome.

Are you sure it's not leaking from the fuel pump gasket?

Yes, when the engine is running oil comes up from the metal thingie.

With my crap eyesight that actually looks like a hole in the block.

Now, regarding this 'metal thingy' can you describe it better, i.e is it a bolt or blank or something? Can you get to it to put some sort of sealant round it?

I must be off to work now, I will be checking this and get back to you.

that is indeed the end of a 10mm sump bolt, i cannot imagine oil is coming UP the threads ! there is not enough sump pressure to do that.

I would expect it is weeping or dripping down from the fuel pump gasket, which has a plastic spacer between it and the block, which may well have split... what do you think, mr Bickle ??

Old Renault fuel pumps always leak a bit. Unless its excessive I've always let them carry on as it ends up stopping the chassis legs rusting too much.

Is it one of the sump bolts?

I guess checking the tightness of the sump bolts wouldn't hurt. On the last R12 I had they were all lose when I bought it. And as has been mentioned already - the fuel pump to block joint above here often leaks.

Deffoa sumpbolt-just been out to look at one of mine(still here too!)

it'llbea fuel pumpgasket leak.

Just whizz it off, (2 nuts) prize loose the gasket &copy onto an old cornflakes packet, cut out, replace & Bobs your uncle. no more leaks.

Thank you all for your swift replies, it was as suggested the fuel pump gasket, i thightend up the pump and the leaking has almost stopped.

20 years ago a mate bought an R12 Gordini that had sat outside for the previous 5 years. He knew he'd have a major problem with rust but when he actually got the car on his ramp, he found that the serious oil leaks had preserved the car excellently (better than any purpose applied rust proofer could have)..

I'd be really surprised if it wasn't the fuel pump (but I'm often surprised in life  )
