Why rear windows only used to go down halfway?

Aerodynamics is the only possibility as far as I'm concerned, the only question is whether they're for keeping rain/washer water away from the mirrors or for reducing wind noise.

I'll try again...

Cars used to have quarter lights, so there was a nice vertical channel for the window to run up and down in.

They stopped putting quarter lights in, and at the same time they started to make the windows a bit taller. Under some circumstances the wind could catch the window and pull it out of line slightly so that it didn't quite slot into the frame when it was wound up. The little rubber wedges were added to take care of this.

I don't know how anybody can look at the shape and position of them and think they are for anything else. :?

I can..... :D I have them on the camper but rather than being firmly fixed to the frame they are actually part of the window rubber. There is no way they are guiding the window anywhere.

No!

the ones I've looked at are mounted with spring metal....movement does not equal a good aerodynamic aid.......

Citroen C1, Pug 107's have them still, quite high up the door.
