Compressor mostly for spraying?

I'm looking at buying myself a birthday present of a compressor.

I want something that I can spray with, preferably HVLP.

I have some welding planned on the 604 and will need to spray bits of it, but not the whole car, and the back end / lower half of my wife's 806 is going to need respraying.

Both cars are metallic so rattle cans are not going to do it.

 

Someone told me to expect a VAT increase tomorrow so I might just order something now.

 

For HVLP I think I need a 3HP 14CFM one.

 

Does it matter too much whether it has a 50L or 100L receiver?

Oil free would be nice but no one seems to do a 3HP one but if anyone here knows of one.

My garage isn't that big and the 50L is smaller and cheaper. Does the tank capacity matter that much?

For example this HVLP gun says it need 9.5 CFM so any compressor that delivers 14 CFM should be fine?

Both are more than adequate, you only need 30 - 50 psi MAX for decent spraying jobs (these will do 80psi max - you can inflate a tyre in about 5 seconds). If you're only doing it a few times, I'd go for a cheaper Clarke one. Gravity fed spray gun as well 'FTW'.

However, you can get other attachments like angle grinders etc, which would work awesome with these.

the first one will manage a single panel at a time, the second a bit more than that

HVLP will use a pressure of 32psi at the compressor which using 10mm pipe and an inline regulator drops to between 12psi and 18psi however you will still not be able to paint much more than a couple of panels as there is not enough reserve air in either of those two compressors.

 

If you are just looking at a compressor for the odd panel or two's worth of painting consider the Bosch or Earlex all in one HVLP systems, very good results can be had and you can even manage a whole car with them.

 

If you want a compressor to use air tools with you will need at least a 15cfm one about 3 hp an a 300 ltr tank to get anywhere

I did look at the Earlex one. They recommended the HV6900 or HV7000

however these things seem so cost as much as a pretty decent compressor.

 

The advantage of a normal compressor is that

a: I know it will work

b: I can use it for other things

 

I did see Practical Classics trying out the smaller HV5000 which is really cheap and small. Sadly they didn't try it with metallic paint, water based paint, clear coat or twin pack so it would be a risky buy.

 

According to the manufacturers site they are for wood preservative, varnish etc

 

Have you used one of these yourself? if so which one?

Not personally, I will be getting one soon though, I have seen a car done in 2K with an earlex system and I was very impressed with the finish
