Underseal removal tip

So as I'm spending a merry Saturday working on the project Omega... Just a quick tip.

We all hate removing old underseal. It's a long boring job. I would love to have had it dipped but given the cost, if I did that I think my wife, as tolerant as she is, would throw me in the tank as well.

I've long been a fan of a hot air gun and various scrapers to get the bulk of it off, before using wire wheels in the grinder and drill to get the remainder off.

On a whim, today I added an extra blast with the hot air gun before using the grinder and it seems to work very well.

I think it's because it's melting the "glue" so the grinder can remove it more easily with friction, rather than relying on the heat from said friction to get it moving. Also seems to make the wire wheel last a lot longer as long as you're sensible.

Probably already well known but thought I'd share while having a tea break.

I think it's what you'd call stonechip, that sprayon, textured stuff that's probably 4-5mm thick on most of the underside and 10mm thick in the arch seams et al.

Can't see why it wouldn't work on other types, it behaves very similarly to the old VW stuff I took off the Mk2 Polo and Golf I did last year. Equally horrid.

And of course no matter where you lay, what angle, and how careful you are, you always get a little molten ball of it in your earhole ..
