ChinaTom Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 Never knew these existed: http://www.carsplusplus.com/specs1978/bmw_725.php Just seen an advert for an E38 725Tds too in Holland.
warren t claim Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 IIRC it's because the West German government wouldn't buy any car over 2500cc.
Station Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 I saw either a 90's 725 or 728 driving through Bidston two days ago!
The Reverend Bluejeans Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 725's were made for the Dutch market due to the tax rules, but they sold less than 1000 of the wheezing turds. They were four speed manual, carburettor things with 150 bhp. The German Government did buy a few unsold ones. The 725tds was a dog slow dizzler with 143 bhp to push it along. When diesel was 60% of petrol price it was sort of worthwhile if you weren't in a hurry.

whiskeyonesix Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 Same engine as Range Rover 2.5TD? Wasn't that the italian VM thing?

M51 indirect boat anchor, pretty reliable though. It was hopeless in the P38 Strange Rover though, utterly useless and wouldn't pull a greased stick out of a Dog's arse. The M51 was really only for a 3 or 5 Series. Anything bigger/heavier is just taking the piss.
pogweasel Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 728i, now there's a car I could groove on. Presence, enough poke, wafty comfort, with almost reasonable economy. Though not reasonable enough to commit.
warren t claim Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 I can't imagine a 725 being that slow. Easily as nippy as a 2.8 carb Granada.
The Reverend Bluejeans Posted June 12, 2010 Posted June 12, 2010 The E23 7 though is rather heavier than a Grandad. I had a carbed 728 once with 170 bhp and that was no ball of fire. 728i E23's are quite acceptable though. Lovely 184 bhp engine, smooooth auto, lots of rust and that great interior smell of musty carpets.
Pete-M Posted June 12, 2010 Posted June 12, 2010 I can't imagine a 725 being that slow. Easily as nippy as a 2.8 carb Granada.2.8 carb Granadas are shit slow though. Painfully devoid of poke. Weird really, as the injected ones go ok.
