New Shite capers

morning all -

well, after my brutal clear out I am now left with a slight problem - given my 2 bases and the pressures at home we really need 3 daily drivers - 2 in edinburgh and one down south. The missus ain't keen on using the daf as a daily - fair enough variomatic does take some getting used to!

so this weekend I decided to add to the collection

This little baby was won - no MOT - same owner for 50 odd years -

chap rang me up afterwards - obviously old and proud of the car - deal was done and colleciton booked - however, next thing you know last night he called me almost in tears - some stupid bint had come flying down the road on her mobile phone and driven into the back of the Farina - grrrrrr....much dentage apparantly - to make matters even worse the old chap has a 'normal' policy on the car - ie no agreed value nor buy back option so it looks like the insurance company will probably write off this wonderful machine - I did suspect some shenanigans but so detailed and upset was the chap and confirmed from 3rd parties it looks like 'one of those things'

so anyway back onto the 'bay and I ended up winning this:

wonderful scimitar shite - looks in pretty good nick but will need recommissioning as been off the road for 3 years - here's one for you - Reliant only built about 4500 SE6/6a's and 6bs - amazing when you see so many in the classic car market - shows how robust the combo of tree thick GRP and Ford 6 pots are!

updates to follow

Yeah, a lot of folk assume that GRP is feeble stuff, but when you consider how much heavier the 6 & 6A are than their contemporary Capris, that says something for the way that Tamworth used to put them together.

Crying shame about the A40, especially as it was the Countryman and in that colour combination, maybe one to watch out for, relisted as a fixer-upper?

Well won! the Scimitar looks very nice, I have a bit of a hankering for one of those, good looks, simple Ford mechanics and GRP bodywork!.....

Why couldn't he buy the A40 back? Just say you want to keep the salvage, pay out less the scrap value? Basically don't let em take it away! Write off can be surprisingly low damage, we all know that.

The A40 - if someone else ran into it (parked) while on the phone, it isn't the owners fault. This means the insurance can't write it off! It is a 3rd party loss - the owner has the right to insist it is restored to pre accident condition regardless of both cost and value.

Good point, if they are not insuring it, they can't write it off.

What a pisser about the Farina, lovely old buses and high on my wanted list.

Nice move on the Scimitar though, Princess Anne-tastic!

Good win on the Reliant; how easy are the chassis to repair? The steel spaceframe on the Peerless was well hidden in places, so the only way to repair it properly was to take the body off.

I'm now a convert to galvanised chassis...

yup - the chassis rails are a pig on the 6a - mind you they are also whoppingly thick steel so do take a long time to corrode - the 6b has galvanised. What most folk seem to do is to restore the bodyshell and paint at the same time as doing the chassis rails - big nasty job but not that complex compared to welding.

Looks like the Farina might not be too bad - the problem they are having is the perpetrator is not being very easy about it - trying to blame the old guy for parking outside his house.

I may well still take this on but I need to know what the score is apparantly the rear valance and boot are dented and - the valance supports the fuel tank so really important and the boot is a pig of a job. Whatever happens iit is going to take several weeks to solve - I'll keep you posted - hopefully all will be ok as the countryman is the nicer IMHO -

anyway suspect when I hand the wife the Scimitar she won't give it back - she'll be demanding a Hermes scarf and a horse next!

If you are parked on the road without Mot does this affect things?
