Renault 21 question

Does anyone know how to reset the trip computer on a R21? I had to swap the battery on mine the other day and the computer, which previously gave me fuel level, range, average mpg and (spurious) outside temperature readings, now scrolls through three sets of random numbers which I have no idea what they are supposed to be, and when the ignition is first switched on the display just sits there flashing until I press the scroll button on the end of the wiper stalk. I've tried holding the scroll button in for anything up to 30 seconds, to no avail. I can't see any other buttons that look like they are trip-computer-related, and the handbook I got with the car usefully doesn't cover the Turbo. I'm a bit worried that the set of random figures that I think is displaying the fuel level actually isn't doing that at all and I'm going to splutter to a halt at the side of the road.

From memory of my 21 Turbo you hold in the button on the instument panel, not on the end of the stalk,my 25/safrane both used to have to be driven to reset there MPH/MPH etc,but i think on a 21 you hold the dash button in...

IIRC push the milometer button for 10 sec..... But there again, I may be going senile....

I am getting old and forgetful, however I seem to remember you have to twist the reset button on the trip (on the clockset)?

Thanks for the ideas, but neither of those works either. Of course it may be that the computer has finally given up the ghost - 21 years is not bad going for French electronics.
