Hmm, I thought I might have found the 3 series' replacement.

I'm no fan of 4x4s but you have to admit that there is no beating them for towing.it's a shame that you have to drive round such a lump 99% of the time for the 1% when you want to tow a car trailer, but it's that 1% that will cause a motorway pileup, insurance claims, words with the police and worse.

I find that to be a very strange view of 4x4s. I've had a lot of Range Rovers over the years and never had any real problem with motorway pile-ups etc.I love driving 4x4s, ok, they're not as nimble as ordinary cars, but that is blatantly obvious as soon as you get into the things so it's common sense to drive them sensibly. I don't like the whole 'school run' thing with them, and I find that most of the bad drivers out there seem to be in BMW X5s, but that's not the fault of the actual car.

You misunderstood me. I'm saying that towing a car trailer with a car on it (unless it's a very light car) is probably only really safe with a 4x4, thus avoiding the pileup that could be caused by towing with an ordinary car and getting in a snake etc.

Thus, when you are towing ( 1% of the time ), you probably do need a 4x4 to avoid accidents.

Ah, schplendid. I need whatever I buy to be capable of towing summat 1060 miles in one go.... 4x4's are the only way, as you say.

I'd try it with a 604 though ;)

Not quite all the boxes ticked (and it's not quite a Range Rover )

I really don't 'do' Discoverys, and that LPG system has been disconnected for a reason... I've bought Rangies with LPG setups in similar states and it normally just means someone has tried to save money on an LPG install by doing it themselves...Doesn't look expensive, but I really don't like 'em.

Im not a big fan of 4X4's for towing, unless they have leaf springs. Coil sprung ranges and discoveries have suspension thats much too soft, they can easily overturn if theres a snake or similar.Best thing for towing is a large estate car IMHO.

I don't like towing with leaf springs as they don't seem anywhere near as stable as coils. I towed the Escort 500 miles with a Transit and it wasn't very nice, a Rangie wouldn't have been affected half as badly as the Transit would. As for the 3 series, £795 if anyone wants it. I've had enough of the pricks and timewasters on ebay and Pistonheads. If it doesn't sell this month, I'm going to strip the fucker and sell the bits.
