Braked A Frame

For those interested here it is, now this is a comercially made one and to me made overly complicated

slightly closer up view with cable attached

different angle showing the moving parts in plan view

closer view of the same

now to me you could either simply pivot it of the slide in the yoke or make a direct connection from the houseing to the rear of the slide..

nowthe cable goes in through the side window and attaches to this

a simple tube and solid sliding bar and spring attached to the peddles with a plate and straps at one end and a plastic angle with a pivot and straps at the other end would sort it out

if anyone wants drawings or templates, mesurement etc just ask as I reckon its a doddle to make.

Ironic humour? :D thats in the vehicle being towed, thats how the brakes get activated incase it wasn't :)

I imagined that the device attached to the handbrake cables. Is there any stipulation of how good the braking has to be?

Looks like it has hideous potential to go tits up, so I would guess it's presence rather than it's efficient function would be of most interest?

That is a faff. Ifor Williams trailers have a good braking system were the forces acting on the drawbar activate brakes via cables. It's dead simple, if the towing vehicle is decelerating it pushes the sliding yoke back, and activates the brake. Acceleration or steady speed means the yoke is being pulled so no braking force. It works. Can't see why it couldn't be similar on an A frame.*Edit - having looked at the pictures again I see it is similar to the IW trailer......I can tell you from experience it works well. It's still a faff with that gubbins in the footwell of the towed car.

same as any other trailer I expect

because you need it to be portable. not fixed permanantly like on a trailer

Well I have towed several vehicles with it and had no issues at all, the extra braking helps considerably, I set mine so that the brakes dont come on immediately under light braking, but do under more forcefull braking :D

Sounds useful enough I suppose, and probably ideal for some of the nutters who use inappropriate vehicles at inappropriate speeds. I have seen / heard of some right nutty A-frame combos that frankly terrify me. Lardiest thing I ever attempted was a Mk5 Escort behind our focus wagon, christ that was frightening, braking wasn't the issue but it felt like the fugga was constantly trying to shake loose or drag you down a ditch. Never again.Old, lightish stuff was no bother at all though, and as mentioned earlier, tugging a mini with it you didn't even know it was there.
