pandamonium Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 Driving along in the Samara today, there was a clattering noise coming from the engine, like a duff bearing. It didn't seem to make any difference what speed the engine was going, so I though it may be the thrust bearing, especially as the clutch needs doing. Anyway, I got a little further down the road, and the engine spluttered and stopped. It would not restart. I pushed the car to the side of the road, then recovered it with the Mazda. When I got home, I attempted to turn the engine over, and it span rather freely. Too freely in fact. My thoughts turned to a previous car I had, a Fiat Panda. The cambelt snapped and the symptoms were the same.Oh bother.
Albert Ross Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 Sounds related.....take off the dizzy cap or oil cap as you turn it over, see if anything turns..........
pandamonium Posted August 7, 2009 Author Posted August 7, 2009 I just hope it's a non interference engine like the Panda was.Such a shame as it was running so well!
mnde Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 I couldn't find anything on the web, but I did find these AA tests that were an interesting read! http://www.theaa.com/allaboutcars/carse ... eName=Lada Fingers crossed for your Samara! Mark.
pandamonium Posted August 7, 2009 Author Posted August 7, 2009 That is the latest. It turns over freely, so nothing bent. I'll pop a belt on after RRG09, and it should all be fine.I might just build up the 1500 lump and fit a new clutch while I'm on.
Mr_Bo11ox Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 turning over freely might mean lots of parts are bent! I think your noise might have been a cambelt tensioner.
Richard Posted August 10, 2009 Posted August 10, 2009 Check the valve clearances. Too wide=bent valve.
