Get him a Toyota/Honda. Tell him to stay on top of oil changes and fluid levels then proceed to drive it into the ground. Corolla\avensis for under a grand is very doable. Though I'd try get a three door corolla to avoid the risk of ex taxis.

Ford Focus mk 2 1.6 Petrol. There's not much to go wrong, they're safe, reliable , drive well, have lots of space, parts are easy to come by, every garage knows how to work on them and there's a huge choice out there.
