Woodworking advice please

I would question the use of plywood. In 1923 plywoods (not even sure marine ply was about at that point) would have been a cutting edge material and I couldn't see it being used in this application unless it was being used to create unique forms that couldn't be made in solid timber and/or lightweight construction was important.
