Towing auto's

Just read Mr_B's gta escapade. This is one of those questions that lurk in the back of your mind and re-appear at 3 am - why can't automatics be towed when in neutral?

I dont know the answer to this, but I always assume its cos the auto box must have some sort of oil/fluid pump in it thats driven when the engine is running. If the engines not going, no oil circulation = fried box.Not all autos behave like this, I know for example those old DAF variomatics can be dragged along all day no problem.I'm not sure about Rover metros, but I assumed that 5 miles of towing would do no harm!

I think Rover Metros will be the same as DAFs - the transmission is the same basic design, just pulleys and rubber bands.

Just like the kids from Grange Hill, just say no, otherwise you will find your car sparko on the floor of the bogs like Zammo. Kippered a couple of bader-boxes this way 'till we learned better. It makes life fun though, driving a totally moss-covered & dilapidated Volvo auto up the motorway with your mate acting as 'bandit', i.e. if it looks like you are gonna get tugged, the guy in the legal car has to start driving like a total bell-end to deflect attention....

Pog-you do that too?My Mrs has become an expert high speed nose picker-resorting to lippy if it looks to be getting out of hand.
