Oil filter wrench - Mazda 6 oil change

I'm planning on tackling a oil and filter change on.my MK1 2.0 petrol Mazda 6 this week . I fully expect it to be a PITA as it has an undertray. Can anyone recommend an oil filter removal tool - no doubt it will be over tightened.

Has anyone done a change on a Mazda -? I have read the undertrays can be tricky to remove. I'm used to simple K-series oil changes.

I did one on my wife’s Mazda 3, it was a grade A ballache, every fastener was awkward and the location of the filter was a pain in the arse. As for which filter tool, get hold of as many as you can as it’s always hard to guess which will work best. I end up using a strap type but it was a bloody pain. I have access to a four post lift as well. Hopefully the 6 will have a bit more space than the 3 though.

ECP have two types of filter listed , cartridge and screw on ! I have access to drive on ramps which should provide some access .

Wife's 1.8 mazda3 was the spin on type, I think access to the cartridge type have a big hex on the end so you can get a big socket type filter tool to make life easier.

Don't drive a screwdriver through it whatever you do. A pair f marigolds is usually enough, either that or a chain wrench. Degrease it first.

Can confirm that you should not screwdriver the filter if it's a spin on type, because if it still doesn't come off you're left without a car.

Cheap filters shear if you do this, you end up with a sharp mess that still won't undo. One of those rubber band ones mostly work. If it slips, pack it out with slivers of timber or rubber offcuts. Never failed me.

My old MK1 Mazda 6 diesel used the spin on type. The undertray came off easy enough, and there was just enough space to use a rubber strap wrench from above the engine. It was a bit more work than my mid 90s VWs, but still not a difficult task. Hopefully the petrol is similar.

Yeah spin on type for the LF pez engine. Under tray is just 10mm bolts iirc and the filter and drain plug are easy to see and get at. I used brute force with my own muscles and rubber gloves gripping it to remove the filter. I remember the crush washer for the drain plug came from halfrauds and it was for a Rover according to the packaging. HFX222 is the product.
