Land Rover 101

It was a gun tractor, it towed the 105mm “light” gun.

It can’t recall the figures but the gun weighed a lot, the ammo weighed a lot and the crew and their personal kit meant gross train weight was very high.

3.5 Rover v8 and low gearing meant it worked very well though.

It outlived it’s successor, the RB44.

There were also a few radio vans (hardtop, same shape as above) and ambulance (taller, wider hardtop).

They were also used to drag Rapier missile units about.

I’ve just re-commissioned my 101 after about a year of slumber.

The handbrake required rebuilding after I had it all apart to replace the transfer ‘box rear output seal. That done a new battery and fresh petrol were applied and it was fired up. V8 running nicely but the clutch pedal went solid...

The 101 has two fluid reservoirs both mounted on the dashboard. Each feeds one side of the dual circuit brakes and the right hand one has a little internal ‘dam’ and two fluid outlets, one for brake master cylinder and the other to the clutch master cylinder. The fluid was drained out of this side and the master cylinder disconnected and removed - to find that this was not the problem; the slave cylinder was seized. Not only that but when I started to unbolt it it was found that it was still holding the clutch out! The weakness of the 101 bellhousing showed here as one bolt stripped and the other was not too clever. An M8 and 5/16” unc mixed here..

A couple of cylinder service kits and some new 1/4” piping flared and fitted had it back together and filled with fluid.

The bolt holes in the bellhousing were helicoiled out at M8 to secure the slave cylinder well enough.

Mrs Squirrel was enlisted to help bleed the clutch and she was given a bottle of DOT4 and instructed to keep the reservoir topped up. All was going well with all the bubbles gone but then more came and the pedal was offering little resistance. Over half a litre of fluid now in my waste bottle and I’m hearing ‘slurping’ sounds as (blonde) Mrs S pumped away... she was letting the res empty before topping it up each time.... sorted that and eventually got our clutch action back.

MoT booked and sorted out the non-operative washers, hazard flashers and horn (all electrical items with a ‘Lucas’ association) it passed. I’ve just re-registered it and got it taxed as a ‘historic vehicle’ so well-chuffed Squirrel now.

Dashboard plumbing - clutch master cylinder is above your left knee as you drive.

101s are fantastic bits of kit, I never knew so many were on here.

Tdis are very tweakable too, wind the boost up and the fueling to match. They are a lot better to drive after that too. You can cure that dead spot before the turbo comes in.

An outing for the 101 this weekend at a military vehicle show near us at Carew Cheriton. There was a selection of military vehicles and bikes there and I’ll try and post some of my pics soon in a ‘spotted’ thread, but for now here are a couple of 101s.
