SPI A-Series Mini rattle

Morning Shite fans.

What’s the first thing I should be looking at regarding this clattering noise? Strangely it only appears once warm (after 10+ mins of use) and then is constant thereafter. It’s only there when driving in gear, when accelerating and during engine braking.

Clutch related? Timing chain? Something else?

Normally rattles on an 'A' series are timing chain or top end. It would be good to hear from under the bonnet. On first hearing that it sounds like transmission though.

Should have read the post properly, yes, transmission. Could be the diff or worn gears in the gearbox itself but either way, not an easy fix I don't think :(

Sounds like the roller bearing on your main shaft in the gearbox has started to break up. On the later Minis like the Spi's the outer bearing case is plastic and with age breaks down, one of the first symptoms of this is this type of noise occuring. I'd get it checked out as quick as you possibly can,it does sound very much like it's transmission related.

All Minis from late 1980 had that stupid bearing, A+ stuff. The rattle is normally worse in 4th gear.

^^ Prob WHS - I had a Metro that had the same issue, found out later from next owner, it largely wrecked the box so as Braddon says, something to look at sooner rather than later.

A-Series timing chains rattle all the time pretty much the same whether hot or cold in my experience.
